Strong tackle - yes. But the AFL donât want players to throw a player to the ground in a way that could seriously impact their head. You can see why it would be seen as un-necessarily forceful and dangerous.
I thought Jude Bolton made a very good point when Smith tackled ? in the pies game & had a free kick paid against him. The pie player had one arm free and one arm pinned and could have chosen to let the ball go and use the free hand to ensure his head didnât hit the ground.
Whilst there is a duty of care owed by the tackler, that is secondary to the primary duty of care owed by the player being tackled not to put themselves in danger just to avoid giving away a HTB free.
I watched the replay of that tackle about a dozen times.
Gray could have put an arm out if he wasnât too busy grasping Nyhuis by the wrist to accentuate the holding after disposal. He also threw himself off the ground. Thereâs a front on angle that shows both of these things pretty clearly IMO.*
A good biomechanics expert would be able to assist his defence.
Yep. Hot issue for the AFL with commercial considerations around workplace health & safety, but to me itâs pretty clear that Gray contributed to the impacts significantly.
Disagree with that.
His left arm is pinned, if he tries to extend that elbow he risks breaking his arm.
The right arm is free, but does not provide him with any protection options as he is being flung onto his left shoulder.
Left arm was holding the footy. Fwiw though I donât think he had time.
Tackler probably didnât need to fling as hard to ground, but itâs borderline stuff.
Bad outcome, not much in the intent.
Would find it a bit hard to see the kid rubbed out for a long time for that tackle, but at the same time you donât want to see a bloke knocked out cold.
