I simply cannot hate anyone more than Carlton. I don’t care that they’re a rabble, ■■■■ heap right now. In fact, I feel rather happy about it and I’d like it to be so for longer.
Hawthorn. Begrudging respect these days. I still hate them though.
Collingwood. Self entitled ■■■■ wipes. Very satisfying to take them down a peg or two.
Richmond. Bandwagoners who are annoying for thinking they are better than what they are.
West Coast. The scarf, the eary-mid 90s and just them being possibly the most belligerent club in terms of supporters.
Adelaide. I had to live there through the late 90s. Almost unbearable.
Port. Wanganeen, Hardwick, Ryder and turfing us out of any finals series we were in post 2001.
Brisbane. 2001 and just them being bottle fed by the AFL.
Sydney. 96 prelim as well as the AFL special treatment thing.
North. Who? They hate us apparently so it’s appropriate that they are rated as almost relevant.

The Hawks are #1. Just ask Alan Stoneham, Tim Watson, Kevin Walsh, Paul Van Der Haar, the Essendon 3/4 time huddle, the Windy Hill point post, Jason Winderlich, Adam McPhee, etc, etc.
The rest don’t really rate as rivals. l don’t hate any of them, nor do l ever fear us playing them. To be our greatest rivals requires a measure of respect. Doesn’t mean l have to like them, but we all have less fortunate mates whose lot in life it is to support others. l don’t mind going to the footy with any of them, win, lose or draw.
Collingwood is there too, but I think that had a large helping hand from ANZAC day (I mean lets face it, pre-saga Collingwood would have easily rated the most hated club in the competition. Essendon supporters aren’t alone there).
But being honest most of the time these kinds of things just end up “teams I really hate”, that isn’t a real rivalry in the club sense. Do people honestly think the current club (remember a club isn’t a static entity like a person) thinks of teams like St. Kilda or even West Coast as rivals? In fact I’d argue the hallmark of a good rivalry is the ability to keep the passion and desire to beat a team going across decades and many generations of footballers. This is of course in part passed on from older players and why most clubs would only have one or two real rivals, it’s hard to transmit and continue many more than that.
Good list, but has nothing on this harshly gurged one from a while ago.

I fkg hate North & it absolutely kills me that they beat us with regular monotony. The disdain I have for Brad Scott (even before he got to NM) & Harvey cannot be expressed in words but despite this I don’t consider them a “rival”.
Hawthorn and Carlton are probably equal.
Then Collingwood, Richmond and a modern day rival in West Coast.

Not really feeling the hate for Collingwood - most of the time I just find their supporters amusingly deluded. Ditto North Melbourne - they are a pissant club desperately trying to pretend they’re relevant.
Carlton will always be number 1. Losing any game to them even a preseason match is totally unnacceptable. I hate seeing essendon losing any game but losing a game to the scum i cant even put into words how much it sucks.
Just their whole club,history, players,fans deserve nothing but sadness and humiliation for havng anything to do with that urinal cake of a club
