Ranking our rivarlies

The traditional Vic clubs, including the relocated ones.

Daylight.

The late comers.

A rival is someone you give grudging respect to.
It’s possible to say ‘well played’ about them and mean it.
So the biggest rivals are Hawthorn and North, although North’s is probably trading on the 90s a little too heavily (but then we may be too).

I hate Carlton.
I hate a certain opinion writer, venomous spiders, infected wounds and human traffic as well, but we don’t have a rivalry.

Collingwood are probably somewhere in between those two.

1.Carlton
2. Hawthorn, Collingwood

That’s about it so far as relevance.

  1. Richmond, because their supporters and KB.
Yeah, I’m avoiding mentioning Blitzkrieg’s post just above.

It was nice of you not to mention it.

Others I merely dislike.

For me it is Collingwood number 1. The first main reason is 1990. You just can’t imagine the scaring that is left on me for the fact that as a 10 year fanatical Essendon supporter I was made to go Victoria Park to watch the filth players be presented to a crowd of ferals. My parents (mum is Bombers and Dad goes for the club that only exists because it is named after the city where footy began) were someone blackmailed by the so called friends we were staying with to ‘pop in’. The other reason is their fanatic supporters I know - they all just ■■■■ me to tears to no end.

No. 2 is Carlton due to all the traditional reasons but also because Prelim Final 99 is still arguably the worst day of my life. I think my hatred would be stronger if they hadn’t been a pathetic joke of a club since this time. At least with them winning more spoons than games you can just laugh at their supporters.

Regarding other rivalries, the interesting one is West Coast. They rate us their second biggest rivals from what I have heard - our WA contingent might be able to confirm this. Something to do with us constantly knocking them over in finals during the 1990s. I am sure Woosha now coaching us could make this even intenser from their perspective given he is the only person involved in all 3 of their flags, meaning he is adored and worshiped by many of their supporters. To me this is a bit like the North Melbourne one except maybe Sheeds made is something a bit more with the jacket and throat cutting gesture.

For me I’d rank both Fark Carlton and the Eagles as equal top in terms of the clubs that I just love to see us flog.

Both sets of fans of those two clubs are just insufferable idiots when they’re going well and dead farkin’ silent and nowhere to be found when they lose…fark them the both to hell.

The rivalries with the Hawks, Swans and Roos have been pretty intense at various stages throughout the last 30 or so years and actually quite interesting.

Apart from 1990 and ANZAC Day clashes, the Pies for me have been pretty meh! for me tbh due to their mediocrity during the eighties ,whilst we were going well and the 15-20 years before their next flag and then our mediocrity over the last 10-11 years.

Ditto for Richmond, as their mediocrity has lasted the best part of 35 years.

Brisbane and Port were relatively short lived rivalries imo in the early noughties up until the Port rivalry was reignited last year with Ryder’s defection to them.

I thought that we had a decent rivalry with both Fitzroy and Footscray in the eighties as they both seemed to be somewhat of a bogy side each time we played them when we were winning those flags and playing regularly in finals.

I also believe, although most here wouldn’t agree, that weve got a pretty good rivalry with the Crows that began with the '93 Prelim, a few 100+ floggings by both sides, '09 Elim, the Princess Di/ Harve’s farewell match in '97 and the large presence of Essendon fans over in Adelaide whenever we play them there.

We may have had a rivalry in the 70’s with the Saints due to some brutal matches out at Moorabbin in front of the ‘Animal Enclosure’ but I just don’t see one with them, since then, at all really.

And I don’t really see that we’ve built too much of a rivalry with both the Dockers and Cats despite some absolutely epic encounters with them both in the past.

The Suns and GWS don’t even rate a mention as they’re just a couple of plastic, AFL factory manufactured clubs with no tradition behind them at all.

Just my two cents worth of how I see where our rivalries lie and why I think they’re ranked that way.

Gee I forgot the Dees, not hard to these days. Maybe in the late '40’s but that’d be about it I reckon.

If you ever spent much time living in Norf Melbourne and if you ever went to Arden Street to watch us play them, you’d understand why someone might see them a little higher up the list than others have them.

I’ve seen little ol’ drunken ladies on at least two occasions in the '70’s smash a bottle and threaten EFC supporters if they didn’t shut up. One’s bottom denture even fell out whilst she was screaming.

It’s all about the individual experience we have as EFC supporters. Of the interstate teams, Port leads the others by a mile. They’re supporters make the filth supporters look like PHD’s!

I hate them all, even the Johnny come latelies who have a sense of entitlement and think it’s fit that we have to change our jumper to play against them and that they should host finals. You joined our league dckheads, remember that. And if you want to play Grand Finals at the Adelaide Oval go back to the fkg SANFL.

But then there’s Carlton. I really really hate those ■■■■■■. I feel different going to a Carlton game than all others, more nervous, anxious and rabid.

Carlton or Collingwood, growing up in the Northern Suburbs,it was all Jezza & Daicos crapola all the time Mate!!!
My other is Norf,i must know half there Membership base,i gather the other 40 or so carry a chip on there shoulder as well.

1) those who flaunt spelling errors

I can not forgive them for the loss back on the 22nd May 1909 at East Melbourne, they beat us ESS 8.11.59 def by UNI 9.14.68.

I wish pain and agony on hawks and carlton - both on field and off field. I was hoping Hawks merged with Melbourne.

Pies are the only team that are on our wave length and I’ll always respect them.
