fun fact, check out the 2005 AFL draft in what was the most compromised in history
Pies did not deserve a PP but got one, took Dale Thomas and some kid called Scott Pendlebury.
Completely undeserved, ditto Hawks from same year (Blues got one but they were ■■■■ for years but still more successful than our current predicament)
And the AFL responded by changing the rules and progressively making it harder to get priority picks for 20 years. Do you have an example from the last decade?
An end of first rounder doesnt move the needle quick enough. The turnaround time for a club to rebuild has become way too long, look at North for example. Or St Kilda.
Not to mention the historically low crowd Essendon had at its last MCG game, lowest crowd there in 3 decades.
This is the beginning of more and more pain. The imminent coach sacking may oddly enough provide a ray of hope to supporters.
Performance wise, another big streak of losses will take us to historically low win numbers over a 40-50 game period.
Oh yeah, it’s absolutely dire but as a rule the AFL generally seem to only offer much assistance after a 3-4 year period of shitness
North won 20 games across 6 years
West Coast won 11 games across 4 years
If we don’t win another game this year it would be 29 wins in the last 4 years.
We managed 6 wins last year, North hasn’t won more than 5 in a season for 6 years and West Coast for 4 years
Unfortunately I think we will have to be rubbish again next year to even be a look in
I’m not talking about what I think would work, I’m talking about what I think might actually happen. Across 2023-24, north’s worst patch was 2 wins from 36 games. If we don’t win another game all season we will be 2 wins from 37 games. They got three end of first round picks spread across two years, and some extra rookie spots.
You bloody fool, it’s already happened. What do you think the extra pick for getting a top 5 pick is for??? The AFL has already done everything in the way of priority picks they’re doing this year, and are probably congratulating themselves on how they’ve added them back by stealth. They’re not giving more.
I think the AFL know the current equalisation process is a shambles. Same teams staying around the top and clubs, in particular big clubs like Essendon being stuck down the bottom is bad for business.
I think if that was their opinion, they’ve just wasted the obvious opportunity to address it in some sort of systematic way, and I’d think it’s blatantly obvious to anyone that “write a letter saying how ■■■■ you are” is not a system that’s going to address the problem.
Yeah, they do but it’s generally not for just one bad year.
I have never wanted to be so wrong but I just can’t see it happening this year.
I’ll be ecstatic if they do
