sadly, when asked to pick a side between the corrupt AFL and the gutter rat that is Peter Gordon, I will always side with the AFL.
I think that is what it would take for the AFL to suck it up and give us decent help

So we’ve got Fitzroy who were wiped out, and GWS who were a bunch of U18 kids who we are likely to be worse than.

imagine Essendon has another poor year, go to AFL house and ask for the # draft pick as a pre 1st round assistance package
Suspect something like that will happen.
AFL has adjusted the rules but it looks as if it’s too soon. Confident we’ll get something next year…which is dumb but it’s how it is.

However, we may get assistance in matching Bewick/Darwish, which if it “protects” pick #2 effectively gives us another top 10 pick (since Tassie will have already taken 9 players).

I do wonder if we’re OK with not receiving assistance this year - we’re already going to have a ton of picks in this draft. If we’re bad again next year (let’s face it, we will be), we’re then more likely to receive better assistance, which would be more useful in matching bids on our NGA players.
If we’ve effectively traded #19 for Bewick and Darwish I’d take that and run.

The problem is that the market will be broken next year. Tasmania has so much draft capital that they are incentivised to bid on Bewick early, likely at pick one.
Like how we are incentivised to bid at pick 1 to wipe out Port and Carlton’s draft capital to bring in our second rounders earlier or leverage trade deals. Except amplified by the sheer number of picks they have.
Let’s say Bewick is ranked 10-ish. They could still bid at 1 to wipe us out because of course we are matching. We pay above market value and they clear two picks out of their way

If Bewick is ranked 10th and devils bid at #1, we would have to let him go and take a player we rank above him.
Then trade him in later.

You do realise there are other players that are nga and father sons in the draft that may well be ranked higher.

If he is ranked 10th then he is potentially around the 17th best player in the age group which we will likely be paying pick 1 for.
It would be pick 1 plus I think 300 points off the next pick.
We just start the draft with so much less draft capital too relative to our ladder position.
