Review Round 9/2025 Ess vs Sydney (chickens in a bin)

Got it one. Said it better than I can.

It’s actually pretty clear that the only real way sides go from being as ■■■■ as we are to being good is through consistently finishing very low and hitting the draft.

We have finished “middle 6” far too many times in the last decade and a half (there’s some stat on that but I can’t be bothered looking it up). Ignoring 2016 when half our list was banned, we haven’t finished bottom 4 since 2006 (is that right?). We are mayor of the Middle 6. It’s not the way you build a premiership side.

It boggles my mind that people are still “glass half full” in a season where we yet again fall over the line against pathetic opposition to stave off the pointy end of the draft … yet again.

I think we finished bottom 4 in 2022. Also in 2015.

I stand corrected! (Edit: My thinking was going through our high draft picks and outside McGrath, Gumby was the last top 4 pick I can remember).

Expect for Hawks how many top 10 picks do they? Watson who was pick 5 and Granager Barrass pick 6 but he’s no longer on the list.

The rest of the list of the list made up players form other clubs, rookies and lateish draft picks.

It’s very likely that we will lose eight of the next ten games with the wins coming from against Richmond twice.

And after that, we have only one winnable game against the saints.

It felt like either result would have been justified.

I’m glad we got the win as reward for our first half efforts

We looked so much better when Reid and McKay are both intercept marking against their opponents

Seemed to spook the swans mids who didn’t know whether to go long or try and pick out a short option, their slight hesitation allowed our mids to pressure and tackle

Also Sydney is one of the last teams that should ever complain about dodgy umpiring considering the dream run they have been given by the AFL over the years

Freo it depends. Their bad is worse than full on Essington this year.

But I agree, we are now going to enter a lean patch. As long as we keep playing the kids and there is at least some effort to stop teams belting us on rebound, I’m completely fine with that.

I had a few Sydney fans around me losing it I quickly reminded them at all the times Essendon copped it over there with the umpiring

Not so nice is it you farking flogs i fisted pumped in their face when the final siren went

The other 9 teams are all complete kents?

Is it though?

It’s possible to be glass half full in our current circumstances without thinking we’ve made it. The kids are playing. We have tightened our defence.

And yes, we have beaten fellow lowly teams. All of them. When was the last time that happened? We normally lose these matches quite regularly.

How do you know we aren’t just a little ahead in our 'rebuild" and that’s why we’re winning a few?

Of course you could be right because this is Essendon.

Swans were top of the ladder last year, played in the GF and beat GWS recently. We had Saad, Hayes, ADW, Kako, Caddy, Robert’s and Reid playing. We have 2 first round picks with Melbournes look like a potential top 5. We have plenty of coin to trade in a Harley Reid and have Koby Bewick arriving in 27.

If Cox finds form and consistently, which could still happen being he turned 23 only 5 months back and he’s 200cm’s, we have a good core group of 24 yo and under.

Also Port were pre lim finalists last year that win shouldn’t be washed over.

We are bulding imo and we only going to be adding more elite talent via this years draft and ngas

ha - it took me a day to understand your reply.

I thought 50s related to the gif :man_facepalming:t2: - crickey I was dumb

We won’t know for a while which one is of us is right and I certainly hope it’s you.

But I do think my comment about how to rebuild by hitting the pointy end of the draft is more or less unarguable.

They were in horrible form, missing Butters who is arguably their most influential player, and the Saints beat them the following week in Adelaide.

The win against Port was nice because we hadn’t done it since 2018.
It’s no indicator of progression though.

When I was on Twitter I followed Adam as he used to be the breakfast announcer on 702 and was great to listen to and also very good it. But when he puts his Swans hat on he is the biggest sook going. Forever whining about how hard done by the Swans were without a hint of irony as to their protected status. It was sad. I think I ended up muting him.

It is hard to follow a Melbourne based team when you when you live in Sydney and have to deal with the faux footbal followers who jump on the bandwagon every time the Swans are doing well. There are a lot of 'em.
