Fair question. A small forward. I was thinking about him in comparison to the number of players we’ve just plonked in the forward line and told to be a forward. I’m sure someone can explain it better but there are some players where the goals always seem to be sort of “downhill”. There are guys who can easily get first hands at a stoppage and dump a kick forward anywhere else on the field, but for whatever reason it doesn’t seem to be the same skill as winning a stoppage 20m out and snapping a goal (a rare few are equally good at both). I have no idea if El Achkar has everything else required to make it, but he does seem to have that goal sense or forward nouse or whatever it is.

I’ve seen enough to say he’s the purest footballer on our list.
I hesitate to draw Rioli comparisons, but he too was the most intuitive and pure player we had on the list at that time. I am aware, yes, that Hird was also on the list at that time.
Pure doesn’t mean best, but it means an absolute feel for the game, a knack of knowing where the ball’s going, and an ability to get where you need to be more often than others.
He’s the most exciting of the youngsters, for mine.

For mine he’s ahead of Kondo and vying with Farrow as the third best of this year’s crop. Sharp and Robey clearly the best. Sharp is a pure footballer, just knows instinctively where to go, how to get it and what to do with the footy.

I reckon one could mount an argument for Stringer being the most “footballiest footballer” we’ve had since Rioli. Jake is absolutely mercurial, insane levels of pure natural talent. He can do things that few others footballers can, but there’s a chasm between his best and worst. He’s never fully harnessed that talent, and no coach has ever been able to harness that talent for long enough.

Huss isn’t in the same league of class that Rioli was. One of the more talented players I’ve ever seen put on an Essendon jumper.
