Review thread - beat the Hawks in round 1 of 2023

Draper promising up forward.

I wonder if we could use him at the centre bounces in the ruck then move straight to full forward. The striker role Stringer played, just from the ruck.

Cellabratory back flips on the train. It’s good after a win.

Or a cuddle

Noticed in one of the Instagram Story posts after Shiel is chaired off that Scott had his arm right around Langford. Good to see, did some good things today after being moved around.

Hawthorn could’ve had 22 legally blind guys playing for them and you still want to beat them. It’s Hawthorn, you wanna beat them any time anywhere. Onto next week.

Those tossers paraded the 83 premiership players at half time. At least they had a crappy day!!

Good game. Was on the top level behind the cheer squad. We were pretty good at setting up the ground and stopped a lot of Hawthorns entries due to good pressure on the ball carrier but outside of that we were covering their players very well too. We can say it was only Hawthorn but it was a pretty impressive win.

Was lucky enough to be at the game today. I have to say that Tippa coming on and kicking his goal would have to be one of the great moments of my time as an Essendon supporter.

In the end I thought we were very even across the the side. Yeah Parish had the ball on a sring, especially in the second half, but other than that I did see any stand outs. But we didn’t have one loser. If Menzies and Davies continue to play as they did today cannot see Snelling getting a gurnsey. Davey was especially good defensively. I thought Jones played well. yeah, he dropped a sitter, but other than that had a good game.
But as much as we played well, Hawthorn were terrible. There were times when we should have been punished for failing to hit a target and we weren’t. We also had a field day due to basic skill errors on Hawthorns part.
It was excellent to see the forward half pressure that was applied. I cant recall one end to end goal from a kick in. The contested ball work was fantastic and everyone went in hard.
What was very evident to me was that with 2MP gone the team lowered their eyes and sought targets rather than just bombing it in. When we did rest the ruckman in the forward line and bomb it in (with quite frankly atrocious kicks) in the second half of the first quarter is when Hawthorn gained ascendancy.
I will also say that the umpires did have a terrible game. No side gained from it but there were some howlers both ways. Draper absolutely took a mark in the goal square that wasn’t paid. Someone had their head ripped of in the back line and the kick was somehow paid against him. But we also got the benefit of some dodgy calls.

It was a great day with a great performance across the side. Hope we can keep it up.

I do love the Hawks fans emphasising how young their team was. The real difference is they had four players >24 years in age, with no more than 20 games of AFL experience.

Don’t get caught up in the win too much. Dodoro still needs to go asap.

It’s a chunk.

Reminiscent of most of the 22s we were putting out last year.
