Review thread - beat the Hawks in round 1 of 2023

There was one over cooked kick that Martin made look good by sending out a tentacle and reeling it in!

I just watched both coach press conferences.

Brad was overtly gracious and mentioned the Hawks’ attacking style and strong preseason form. He was also pretty measured about our performance.

By contrast, Mitchell did not even once give credit to us. Just talked a lot about which Hawk players did some things well, and that they were a better side than they showed today.

So - in addition to being an abysmal human with f-all mates, the Hawks’ new coach is also an arrogant tool who seems pretty deluded about where they are as a team.

They deserve him.

What a sensational start to the season!

Always good to give the old rivals Hawthorn a touch up, as we should given the state of their list.
You love to see it, especially with Sam Mitchell at the helm!

Today was all about the return of Tippa, gave me goosebumps when he came on, along with his immediate impact, ALMOST doubling down with a couple of goals.

Well done to his new apprentice too. The indigenous talent is super exciting.

Go Bombers.

Setterfield first in on both occasions.

Essentially meaningless, but still vaguely interesting!

I can’t get to games these days but I’m obsessed with the importance of a good zone defence to team success.

Is there anybody that is interested in this part of the game that was at the match today that cares to comment on how it looked?

We haven’t been able to execute this part of the game pretty much ever, despite zones being around since about 2008, but it looked ok on tv, unfortunately can’t really tell fully on the tv though.

Im due for glasses me thinks been meaning to go the optometrist to get my eyes checked players looked blury from the top level

Uncharacteristic. ■■■■ him.

I feel satisfied.

Good to see the little feral Mitchell being handed a bad day by us.

Quite delicious.

Go Bombers!

Yes, their plan is on track to get Harley Reid

Just finished watching the game . Saw the result so cracked a bottle of champagne to enjoy while I watched.
No joggers
No grass minders
Pressure on the ball carrier
Kicking to advantage
And of course the joy in seeing Tippa return, Davey showing his stuff and all the new lads doing well.
Champagne finished…. It’s been a fair while since I’ve enjoyed a game as much as this.

Didn’t focus on this but it’s a constant bugbear when fans who don’t understand zoning don’t understand why players don’t run themselves ragged trying to run man-on-man. We seemed to run our zone a little tighter straight ahead and inboard, by leaving their least dangerous guys wide and back, and across on the switch. This caused them to try the switch an awful lot. But we allowed just enough to cover them (mostly), and even when we didn’t, they mucked it up with an mis-hit. I particularly noticed Martin and Langford striding long distances to provide cover.

Two points I’d throw out there

  1. Last year we seemed to like Lav pushing high (ish) up to try and stop the ball getting over the back, which was cracked open a lot. We were much more conservative with that last player back - last man back typically stayed goalside or on the shoulder.

  2. overall we ran and covered ground very well. Seemed cohesive. Both very different to the first half of last year. But it’s all comparative, 10 goals better than this Hawks side could still be 10 goals worse than Geelong… I think we are better sorted than rd 1 2022, the question is by how much…

We are setting up the ground much better. It was evident against St Kilda in pre season that we had a semblance of a defensive web but our intensity in that game with some unimaginative forward entries left something to be desired. Today was much better. More pressure on the ball carrier but we also had all the forward and outside options well covered with defensive players setting up 1:1. It didn’t always work; there were a few times Hawks could have got us with the extra player on the fat side when they switched quickly but their ball use wasn’t brilliant and we were able to recover quickly. Good signs.

this is the big issue out of the day for me…

wtf

You have very low standards…

Just kidding.
We should learn to celebrate the victories wherever possible.
It gets a bad moniker here (being a happy clapper) but for farks sake, we need some positivity to counter balance the mental ■■■■■ farkery this board delivers.
