Review thread - beat the Hawks in round 1 of 2023

He’s a show off/limelight hog?!

Just kidding.

I think he just happened to be closest both times. And gee doesn’t Drapes make up some ground there.

Nothing gets between Sammy and a goal celebration.

First few minutes of the first quarter: Redman marks the ball 50 meters out, directly in front.

Essendon supporters: “pencil it in. This is a goal”

Commentators: “he’s not a known goal kicker. It might be just beyond his range. Maybe best to pass it off”

Idiots. Do your f*cking homework.

That was an awesome performance, putrid opponents aside. I was heading in fully expecting another one of those horrible 3-4 goal victories, where we make basic skill errors, not defend or pay the opponent any respect, and score a ton of behinds.

Some of my thoughts:

  • I was pleasantly surprised at our skill level. Even when the game was close at the beginning, we were hitting targets by both hand and foot, and maintained that skill level even as the game progressed and fatigue would have been settling in. I loved the precision of our handballing in pack situations particularly. We were not only able to handball our way through the congestion, but were able to hit a target by foot at the end of it.

  • The Hawks NEVER looked like scoring a coast to coast goal. They tried the usual method teams employed last year to cut us apart (kick to HB flank, switch, and hit targets throughout opposing wing all the way to goal). Today, they got to CHB, switched, then realised that we had them covered down the line. They would then fark around with it at CHB, before bombing it down the line to a contest.

  • Our defending today was elite. It seemed like every time they entered F50, we outnumbered them, and were able to clear the ball easily. There was a clear change in the gameplan from this end, and we looked so much better defensively.

  • Even individually, the players really put in today defensively. There was a lot of shepherding, tackles were sticking for the most part, and the players busted a gut trying to pressure their opponents. The effort from Langford(?), in the third quarter against Wingard in our D50 was farking awesome. He embarrassed that little flog in that contest, and stopped a certain goal.

  • Parish was outstanding today. He, Shiel and Merrett combined very well today. Having Setterfield in there also helped considerably.

  • How fkn good is Redman?1? Our entire backline played very well today.

  • Perkins looked so much more bigger and stronger, and it showed. They couldn’t tackle him. He was amazing today, and really, should have kicked 5 atleast.

  • Draper is the heart and soul of the team. Fk he brings a whole new level of energy when he gets going!

  • Davey. Fk me this kid is going to be something!

  • Walla. The entire joint fkn erupted when he came on and scored that goal. The roar was deafening. He obviously has a lot more to do from a fitness POV, but he hasn’t lost any of his touch. His ability to outbody defenders is a piece of farking art

All in all, that was a very encouraging performance, albeit against terrible opposition. The Suns will come out hurting next week, and we might be ripe for the picking after doing it so easily today. The next challenge for BDB is keeping the players grounded, and to have them focused on bringing the same effort next week. If we do that, we’ll smash Gold Coast, just like we did last year.

For those who had an issue with the majority of our forward 50 entries (a lot of high long bombs).

I thought it was quite obvious and others had mentioned it from training reports as well that it appeared that the players were having that dangerous kick that falls anywhere from 15-30 from goal, drilled into them as it:

  1. Puts pressure on the oppositions defence.
  2. Allows you to bring your smalls into the game and try and lock the ball in.
  3. Allows your defence to set up and anticipate where the ball will come back out, making it easier to squeeze the opposition and push up the field.

This is why you saw the likes or Ridley, Redman and the wingers pushing forward and hitting the scoreboard.

There will be far more talented and experienced teams that this will not work against (Geelong would feast off these types of forward entries) but for an inexperienced Hawthorn team, it wreaked havoc and made them feel a sense of pressure they weren’t able to cope with.

We also made sure we took advantage of the manning the mark rule and would take theextra 5-10 metres on offer before kicking it in and thus eradicating the shallow entries that often would be pinged back over heads last season.

I think it is a decent strategy at the moment though and as for however frustrating it might be throughout the season, it gives players clear direction on what is expected and makes things predictable for our forwards. It allows us to to bring our smalls, half forwards and wingers into the game and allows our defence to set up behind the ball so we don’t concede goals on the rebound.

Anyway, one game but pleasing signs and hoping that things will only improve as we integrate more senior players once they return from injury.

very nice, thanks

I typically venture over to the opposing team’s BigFooty (yes I know) board after a game just to gain a different perspective. There were many posters there already questioning Mitchell’s ability to coach and it’s only a matter of time before the media get on him.

I know they gutted the list, but that was a team without a clue today and all Mitchell wants them to do is attack attack attack. I honestly think he’ll be gone by the end of the year.

First time bothering to listen to a EFC coach in a long time, actual football talk that is relatable

First Crack seem to focus on the decisions they made on the off-season.

Gutted the list. Removed a lot of experience that’s probably required to help bring the kids into the game etc.

Could be disastrous for them. Heh.
