Rebuild complete. Need to go hard at the trade table.
Nice effort to remember their 1983 GF win…NOT. The champions of the past would have been disgusted with that meek performance. All those thugs would have been weeping if only inwardly at how inept rhe Dawks were. Made even sweeter by the media byild up in the lead into the game.
Mitchell has destroyed there list. They will be a rabble by round 5 and for a few years to come.
Gone too young like North 5 years ago.
We are so going to get ahead of ourselves now. HAHAHA!!!
Who got pulled off for tippa?
Jones
We know how Hawthorn feels.
It sucks being smacked by the eventual premiers in round 1.
Not me
Oh no. They’ve gotten to Peos.
I’m sure it’ll be fine.
Can someone post Walla’s goal. Ya woulf think the EFC website would be quicker
I loved this, I like how Brown played along and handed him the mic for him to answer the second question.
me!
Alternate view: chant, drop a pin, celebration.
Yep they look like spoon material
One long-term habit I’d like to see us shake is having ‘the defensive guy’ in the middle who does all the tackling. This goes back years - when Devon Smith beat the all-time season tackling record he covered up a bit of slackness on the part of the rest of the team. Same when Zach was the guy, and the EFC social media people were talking up ‘Zackles’ all the time. Setters got 6 tackles today and did some very good defensive work, but we can’t just leave it up to him.
When the pressure was on early today, of our smalls it was pretty much only Setterfield, Davey, Durham, laying any tackles. We padded the tackle stats late when the Dawks were thoroughly broken, but it was deep into the third quarter until Parish, Shiel, Heppell, Langford, McGrath and Perkins got on the board - and Caldwell never did.
The Hawks are ■■■■, and we did exactly what we needed to do and put away a ■■■■ side despite some massive outs and a crap first quarter. It’s been a while since we’ve done that. Setterfield looked good, Weiderman did what he needed to do, Davey showed something, and the more we see of 20-possessions-a-game Perkins the happier I’ll be. Still some stuff to work on though.
Yeah I think this says a lot more about Hawks than us.
We’ll be a bit better than we were in the first half of last year, but there’s still a way to go before we’re actually good.
ok, all based on beating one of the predicted bottom sides, but it’s more how they played
That looked and played like a very different Essendon side.
They played four quarters.
They regularly ran hard to space to offer (uncontested) options, which opened the ground up and allowed for easier ball movement.
Kicking was solid. Targets were hit. Marking was strong.
Good pressure, which improved as the game went on.
We didn’t ease off and finished well.
Some of the ball movement looked like set plays/stuff they’ve learnt at training. Out of defense from kick ins or moving along the boundary line. It looked controlled and well executed and players knew what they were meant to do.
It was a promising first game. They’ve been working on stuff and some of it has taken hold and learnt. And it worked.
They looked like a half decent footy side.
Our delivery to the forward line was still too much bombed high. And our placement (especially the smalls) around packs needs a lot more work. But we kicked 19 goals, so that’s bloody good.
Player wise:
Perkins looks like he’s continuing his improvement. Just love how he does his footballing. He’s flashy without carrying himself as flashy. He’s stealth,
Davey - you know he’s going to be an exciting player
Redman - such an outstandingly solid player. Top effort and skill. So reliable.
Ridley - back with a lot of composure and confidence.
Weideman and Setterfield - played well for first games. Setterfield just adds that physical presence to blunt the opposition mids and offer protection for ours.
Menzie - so good to see him make the most of his opportunity
Coach Scott - nice to start with a win, but it’s more pleasing/important for how they played.
This could all come crashing down next week or the next, but since Scott is building the side based on the fundamentals, then win or lose or even occasional horror game, it should make us overall better as we stick to the plan.
I saw a different Essendon today and I liked what I saw.
