Review Thread vs Eagles 2023 - How the west was won (by 50 points)

Ground out a win when we needed to grind out a win.
It was a bizarre match to watch as the coverage had the feel of 80s country leauge game on local television.
Expected the players to jammin down a dart at half time.

My phone has been better than tv
Bloody weird :joy::joy:

Got the result needed, no injuries that I know of & no possible suspensions that I could see - job done. It was ugly but I think a fair bit of that was their tactics which was more about harm minimalization than winning.

The players who came in looked rusty, particularly Laverde but I thought Bryan was ok for his 1st game of the year & should get a block to build from. Tippa looks cooked which is sad but we probably need to drop him before the bye.

where can we get a list of Ess goal kickers for 2023 so far?

Is from Swamp:

  • 6.10 (46) - 2023 R11 v WCE
  • 6.11 (47) - 2001 R21 v wce
  • 6.15 (51) - 2018 R17 v gcs
  • 6.16 (52) - 2018 R14 v wce
  • 7.11 (53) - 2012 R09 v gws
  • 7.11 (53) - 2020 R06 v nth

FFS, Musk, stop being an ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– .

AFL website. Go to stats. Filter Essendon only.

Also, it was our biggest win out west in 20 years (according to the commentators who were terrible).

What’s changed from last year (driven by the coaching change) is the we have closed the gap between our best and worst by lifting the level of our worst performance - and, tonight we were closer to our worst than our best.

If, at the start of the night, someone told you we would win all 4 quarters, win by 50 points and have no injuries, you would take it.

We were not pretty, but we were pretty effective.

Whilst we dominated contested possession (for something different), we only halved clearances. Thankfully, despite having 7 more turnovers in Q1, we finished with 6 less turnovers at the end of the game. Essentially, that just points to the fact that West Coast are playing a number of WAFL standard players currently.

If we can play that ā€œaverageā€ and concede only 46 points, we are going to win a lot of games… .

This is impossible.

Not a great performance in many ways, but a very good win.

West coast exposed a few things that need working on, but we still found a way to get an 8 goal win with Perkins, Hobbs etc getting midfield time. Good result.

Midfield is missing 2 top mids, but our younger mids got a bit of stoppage and CB action

I have to try to hold back because this was a glorified practice match against a WAFL team.
But.

Draper’s first half was very good.
Durham. Ungh! Friggin’ beast. Throw him forward earlier.
Heppel looked…sharp.
McGrath so solid and creative.
Snelling…is a limited player who generally understands his limitations. Really good.
Stringer in the midfield (and Stringer taking two taps in a row shows just how much we were taking the absolute ā– ā– ā– ā– ).
Ridley…omg…
Martin remembered that he’s silk.

Hobbs. Hobbs. My beautiful little Horsham junk-yard dog.
You can absolutely play him as a small forward. It won’t kill him.
If Parish comes back and we drop Hobbs bEcAuSE hE’s a mIDfIeLdEr…I will lose my Farking nut.

thanks

Here:

Yeah, got him mixed up with Chris Yarran (lol). Same hype, same career trajectory. High pick to FCFC, do nothing, then stagnate at WCE until being delisted and nobody noticing. He’s from the 2016 draft.

Wasn’t pretty but take it and get the hell out of that shithole.
Very concerning on how easily they cut us up on the open side at times tonight and thought they really didn’t allow us to play our game in the first half. Happy that we found away to win and by a decent margin in the end

Itchy ā– ā– ā– ā–  from all the action he’s been getting.

He has had groin soreness for at least 2 weeks. I think its left side ?
It might be hampering him a bit.

7th on the ladder baby!!!

Transition defence still needs a lot of work!

Need to get to the bye in good order and reset. Boys do look like they are craving a break
