Ridiculous Lyrics

99 luft balloons. Listen carefully, it's all jibberish made up of non-words.

Except for ‘Captain Kirk.’

Except of course if you speak German.

It’s still a stupid song, but it’s certainly not made up gibberish.

Macarthur Park's lyrics were a bit silly, with cakes left out in the rain.

I think Richard Harris may have been consuming recreational substances.

Jimmy Webb wrote the song, Richard Harris just, sort of, sang it. Jimmy also wrote UP, UP and AWAY.
But he also wrote Wichta Linesman and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, 2 of the greatest songs of the era, so he is forgiven.

I was inspired to start this thread after hearing a little jazz number some oldies may know - 'It Ain't Necessarily So'.

And the line -

He made his home in
A fish’s abdomen

Got any ridiculous lyric lines?

Context please. They’re the words of the cynical drug dealer, Sportin’ Life, from a classic popular opera. Ira Gershwin knew his way around a lyric.

I know the book (Heinlen?) but never heard the song.

Anything by Abba. When English is your second language then you know you’re going to get ■■■■■ lyrics.

“A razorblade suitcase, the pain travels with you…”

Sure it does, Gavin Rossdale.

Lucky that my lips not only mumble They spill kisses like a fountain Lucky that my breasts are small and humble So you don't confuse them with mountains Lucky I have strong legs like my mother To run for cover when I need it And these two eyes that for no other The day you leave will cry a river

thanks Shakira

Apparently Jimmy Webb was a bit of a Sci Fi nerd growing up, as was I, and sought permission from the great old right wing tale spinner before using the title. Never a single success but became a bit of an album staple. Would have loved to hear Louis Armstrong do it but this is the next closest thing.

We’ve probably read many of the same books, mate

Dangerous woman- ariana grande

Somethin bout somethin bout somethin bout you

I’m sure that was a first draft with the intention to go back write better lyrics later, then they said stuff it, it rhymes, no one will notice.

“I know that I must do what’s right / Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti”

Not only lame, the line is so forced into the song the excess syllables flow so poorly.

Was a good song though!

"A razorblade suitcase, the pain travels with you..."

Sure it does, Gavin Rossdale.

Goodness, that’s obscure.

Also wrong I think? ‘Razorblade Suitcase, All the tricks of trade.’

He’s got plenty more though:
"I touch your mouth, my willy is food. "

I got my head checked. By a jumbo jet.

Not sure if ridiculous is the right word for this (patronising, perhaps?), but the lyrics for ‘Nikita’ were a tad annoying to me at the time.

Hey Nikita is it cold
In your little corner of the world
You could roll around the globe
And never find a warmer soul to know
Oh I saw you by the wall
Ten of your tin soldiers in a row
With eyes that looked like ice on fire
The human heart a captive in the snow
Oh Nikita you will never know, anything about my home
I’ll never know how good it feels to hold you
Nikita I need you so
Oh Nikita is the other side of any given line in time
Counting ten tin soldiers in a row
Oh no, Nikita you’ll never know
Do you ever dream of me
Do you ever see the letters that I write
When you look up through the wire
Nikita do you count the stars at night
And if there comes a time
Guns and gates no longer hold you in
And if you’re free to make a choice
Just look…

I’ll happily put my hand up and say that there are a lot of songs (lots and lots!) with worse lyrics than this that I love.

Go figure!

There are so many but my favourite is:

It’s like Murder she Wrote
Once I get you outta them clothes.

“I know that I must do what’s right / Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti”

Yeah, that’s why I keep choosing it at karaoke. Then I get to this line…

I think that stands up pretty well upon reading it now.

And I don’t think anyone should feel bad about saying East Germany in 1985/6 was a pretty ■■■■ place.

I got my head checked. By a jumbo jet.

I thought it was “by Ajen Bochek”, whom I then assumed was some psychiatrist dude.
