Round 1 2025 Review

Why don’t we shepherd?

Caldwell and Duzz crack in all night.

Yeah look the umpiring usually favours the better and home team.

But some decisions were just such obvious howlers. Those are the ones you wonder how on earth can they be serious.

Im not a senior coach but I could see very clearly from about 5 minutes in that we were rusty. Thats the point I would send out a message to flood the backline to minimise the damage. Instead we gift them a fully open forward line and give the game away. Dumb coaching again. I want to believe but the evidence just doesn’t show anything tactical from the box.

It appeared tonight as if one team has spent the last 2 years or so assembling a bunch of young kids with upside who can kick, and another has spent that time trying to grind Kelly Heppell Laverde Shiel and Goldy to a final and then course corrected and tried to do the other plan in an off season

Doesn’t really support your argument. Bryan was okay.

We seem to find ourselves flat footed in a lot of contests. Then we are statues when we need to be giving options to the ball carrier. Backline is too slow to defend leads and once the ball hits the ground. So many times you see the backline relying on others to cover.

Mids need to sort out centre bounce. We tap to where our players aren’t.

Too many rucks.

Should consider using more triangle drills. Could see a much, much faster version of the round ball version. Basically what Hawthorn uses to get that massive run.

After years we still can’t play a zone well. Man on man worked later.

Too bad the rest dont seem to care

Hawks were always the one team to abuse our inability to defend C2C goals.

Bloody hurts to keep giving them up though

I think most care but not enough to desperately want it.

Tonight was almost a mirror image of Essendon the last two years. Smashed early when it counted, competitive after that but not polished enough or good enough.

Ball movement into 50 still poor, defensive transition of our opponents still concerning.

Same old, same old. As you were!

Jaxson Prior, out, immediately if there was any seriousness about the raising the standards edge stability coach

A for effort. Maybe a C for execution.
Thought we were willing at the contest and at times took risks with the footy…but beaten by a much better side.

Went better then I thought it would

We’re still only half a team complete.

Durham
Draper
Martin
Merrett
Kako
Caddy
Caldwell
Duursma
Langford

Everyone else needs to either stamp their mark or be let go.

Semi finalists

Reid or McKay must go for a while. On McKay’s pay packet he will probably stay.
Poor balance tonight. Horses for courses Brad.
Sheil experiment should be over but we know it won’t. Tsatas will bounce back.
Bryan not strong enough. Worrying.
Jones excellent, as was Caldwell.

Have to laugh at people who said no way would you trade Martin as part of a deal for Harley Reid

I think had we played a team without a game under the belt it would have been a different story.

Hawks were just clean

Can we finally work out that senior guys like McGrath & Redman are mentally weak and are never going to change.
We need to continue to turn the list over, but damn it makes it hard when we put them on long term contracts.
The club will not embarrass themselves by dropping them.
We need to blood players to find some that can stand up in the contest.
El-Hawli needs to come in & we need to add smalls with pace, god knows our talls cant mark, so whats the point.

Why are we always trailing our opponest from behind in a contest not once did i see any of our blokes beat their opponent and get in front when the oppo go forward
