Round 1 Dons V Suns 26th March 3:30pm(Qld time) - Metricon Stadium

57 point loss coming up

Ya gotta have dea in there i reckon. He’s been very solid and is a good user of the ball

My round 1 team would be something like this:

B: Baguley - Hartley - Goddard
HB: Dea - Brown - Kelly
C: Fantasia - Zaharakis - Z Merrett
HF: McKenna/Kommer- Daniher - Stokes
F: Tippa - Grimley - McKernan
R: Leuenberger - Crowley - Bird
I: Simpkin - Langford - Cooney - Parish/Gleeson

Take as much sun protection as you would if you were going on a trip the sun. It gets real hot.

There’s also a heap of places to have a kick before and at half time.

at least we have been practicing in the heat for this game!

Good team. Personally I would swap Cooney and risk Laverde even though only half a game played. Get him in now is my approach and can be a damaging lead up forward.

Bombers at $4.25 - might pop a lazy pineapple on that.
Yes, you read correctly.

Well it is not impossible. We know O’Meara and Swallow are not playing and Prestia in real doubt. Ablett hasn’t played yet so the midfield is weakened. I would put Crowley on Hall to make it just Ablett damaging us which he will probably do anyway.

Section 218 according to tx. Just bought what’s available to be sure of admission. Not driving all way up there and not get in!! No idea of ground aspect, don’t expect full house, will hopefully seek better spot once in. Will trust coaches to pick best side, expecting big win.

I wasn’t so much referring to the reasonableness of our prospects, I was referring to the unlikelihood of my putting money on the Bombers at any price. But first (and last) rounds often produce upsets and I reckon were a chance.

Bags Hartley Gwilt/Ambrose
Gleeson Brown Kelly
Z.Merrett Cooney BJ
(Laverde/J.Merrett) Daniher Langford
Stokes Grimley Mckenna
Leuenberger Crowley Zaharakis
Mckernan Parish Fantasia Walla
Emergencies: Dea Bird JMerrett

  • Gwilt should probably play ahead of Ambrose because he offers a bit more when we have the ball
  • Laverde to play if fit, if not then Jackson Merrett gets a run purely because he is accustomed to playing on a forward flank. Jackson must lift though. We desperately need Laverde to be fit this year, because he is a size we’re lacking, has some speed to go with it, and is versatile. I genuinely think he could breakout as an equal parts midfielder-forward.
  • Cooney should be played in the middle predominantly as an inside ball-winner. I think gone are the days where his kicking can be counted on. However he still has some pace out of congestion and is still very capable of winning clearances and using his size. Given our lack of ball-winners he’s a lock for me, but it’s only if he plays in the middle.
  • Mckenna showed a bit through particularly the first two games, and I saw a fair bit of him last year so I am comfortable picking him. Kommer should not be in consideration really imo, while Jackson Merrett doesn’t have consistent enough nous around goals and Jake Long, while improved, would benefit from playing higher up the ground. Eades’ suspension and injury came at an inopportune time because a spot was well and truly up for grabs. Hope he gets back into it soon, although his kicking is still a fair way off.
  • BJ to rotate with Gleeson and Fantasia through the wing and half-back flanks.

Cute

What I seemed to forget was how much McKenna will help us win this week, he would know all gold coasts weaknesses.

B: Dea Hartley Gwilt
HB: Baguley Brown Fantasia
C: Simpkin Z. Merrett Gleeson
HF: Goddard Daniher Stokes
F: Laverde Grimley Cooney

Foll: Leuenberger Zaharakis Crowley

Inter: Parish Walla Kommer McKernan

Emerg: McKenna Dempsey Ambrose

Others: Bird Kelly Langford Hams J. Merrett Edwards Long Ashby Eades Francis Polkinghorne Jamar Morgan Redman Nyon Wallis

Bolters:

Dea - Has taken his chance, negating his opponent and looking assured with the ball.
Stokes - Brilliant first game puts in straight into the round one team.
Grimley - Has showed enough to suggest he will be an able foil to JD.
Harltey - Looks a dependable defender who is capable of taking the gorillas, and is a thumping kick.
Walla - Already one of the better ball users in the team.
Zaharakis - Looks to have regained the touch and explosiveness he had in 2011.
Kommer - Looks to be running freely and is providing plenty of niggle.

Sliders:

Bird - Disappointing preseason so far. Expected more.
Langford - I’m not sure he has the natural instincts of a midfield. Would rather see him forward.
J. Merrett - Great opportunity this preseason to establish himself. Lacks the fire in the belly.
Edwards - Plenty of talent, but does not work hard enough.
Kelly - Looks out of touch, but will no doubt force his way into the side when he regains match fitness.

What I seemed to forget was how much McKenna will help us win this week, he would know all gold coasts weaknesses.

what would conor know about gold coa… oh.
