Round 2 - Hawthorn - Discussion, Changes

If winders does a hammy it will be regardless of where he plays, just saying.

Or when he plays.

If winders does a hammy it will be regardless of where he plays, just saying.

Or when he plays.

I just don't get peoples logic on this.
If he is going to get injured it doesn't matter if he is playing AFL or VFL an injury is an injury.
Do people think doing your hamstring at VFL level makes it less serious than what it would be at AFL level?
He should play this week but if he doesn't I hope it isn't because people are saying "be careful and don't let him walk anywhere between matches in case he falls and breaks."
If we did the right thing and wrapped him in cotton wool properly, he wouldn't play a game of football again.
I just don't know Zimm... I... Just can't deal...

After watching Hawks closely today, I really think we are a good chance.

If we do lose, it wont be thru lack of shots on goal, it will be because we didn't nail them, as ihas been our way at times.

Thing is, ... I think Chappys laser guidance shows the way for the team & may have sorted that flaw. Just hope he isn't injured & this time a knock is really just a knock.

We need him for at least the 1st 4 weeks so the lads get into the habit.

Yes a hammy is a hammy at VFL level, however if he does it at vfl level, we aren't a man down in the seniors.

So it's not only a risk he will get injured, it's a risk we will be a man down against a side we can't afford to be.

I think people need to start moving away from thinking Winderlich is the answer. Yes we'd all love it if he could get his body right and play almost every week. That's just not going to happen.

At this point in time our priority should be, to building a cohesive forwardline. When that is solved and there's a better picture of who and what is working well, and who isn't, then fall back on a somewhat trump card in Winder.

Tis pointless thinking this I know, cos if he is fit, no doubt he will play, I just think it's the wrong mentality to go with

Yeah I tend to agree, i see winders as more the cherry on top at the moment.

Winders can come straight back in as his fitness base prior to his injury was ahead of Dempsey. Winders is in our best 22. If he is fit, play him. I know it’s a long season, and yes if we were playing Melbourne, I’d give him another week. But it is very important for the psyche of team that we beat Hawthorn on Friday night. They’ve beaten is us up in recent times.

Well with that philosophy he should never play again.
Actually we shouldn't even field a team and the AFL should disband as that could happen to every single team every game to any player.
Football is football and if he is fit, put him in, simple.
What if before he got injured he had kicked 7 goals? All these pointless hypotheticals of whether or not him getting injured during a game will possibly effect the outcome of the game or diminish our chances of winning are irrelevant.
He is a class player. If he is fit, he should be one of the first names picked on the team sheet each week.
If the coaching staff had that philosophy he wouldn't play again and would have retired at 25.
The football he plays should be for Essendon in the AFL whenever he is fit and we should not have him wasting his production and abilities in the VFL reserves team running around, waiting to get injured again.

You can't have it both ways, can't claim it's pointless dealing in hypotheticals, then say it's a waste playing in him the reserves waiting to get injured.

What I should have probably stated before is that I don't think he should be rushed back against a top side ala Hawthorn this week. Personally don't see the point, I don't think we will beat the hawks with or without him (just going by recent history).

By all means bring him back for Carlton if he is right, or maybe the saints (don't think they'd want to risk in on the flight to freo).

Like I said though, just a personal opinion. I don't think he should be rushed back for the hawks game

It's going to be a risk playing him anytime, but you also have to try and manage that risk, and rushing him straight back, after his history with injuries against a top side in round 2 is not smart management IMO

I would say Winderlich in for Zach.

For one thing, you can't be Sub every week unless you're 30 some years old like NatRat.

Give Zac a full game, in the VFL, and Winders comes into the team.

If Melksham is 100% match fit, he'd come in in place of Gleeson, not because Gleeson deserves to be dropped, but if you have to bring in bigger bodies to play the Hawks, dropping the smallest body would be one way of doing it.

Melksham is suspended

Freak that, no changes.  Let this mob back it up.

Hawks aren’t the massively imposing physical side they once were. Wanganeen, Duryea, O’Brien, & Hill are not huge.

Shouldn’t be overly conscious of that. Winders for Gleeson means we’re basically stuck with Hardie back. not sure I like that. Friday we did a bit of swapping with Goddard, Hardie, Hibberd taking different matchups, worked well.

Love the fact we are looking past the previous mantra no Licha, no Dempsey, no run no win.

It will be great when they can play, but if the young’uns are fit and playing well, and they’re not, play the young’uns. If Licha is fully fit bring him in for Hardingham and let’s hope Pig finds his form.

lf Licha is fit, he plays, end of story. He is a touch of class in all things he does. He and the coaches will know where he stands in relation to his latest injury, but he is no value to us sitting on the sidelines regardless of the opponent.

Because Gleeson is still the size of an 11 year old girl. We won't get away with that against the likes of the Hawks. They will use that as a massive mismatch in my opinion.

Brad Hill wasn't exactly Thor in his first season.

We're playing them at the right stage of the season... but it would still take a monumental performance to actually beat them.
Our last few clashes against them at Etihad have been dismal. The 'No Franklin' and 'We now have Chapman' situations still don't give me any extra confidence.

Do you remember Robert Flower?

just barely. Because that was generations of football evolution ago.

Gibson possible suspension will be helpful

Hill for the Hawks, skinny as, debuted last year and handled himself very well
