Round 2 vs Collingwood @ Windy Hill - 1pm Sunday 23rd April

Essendon supporter page on fb have Clarke as one of the best on ground

Expected some effort from. Collingwood after they looked like Girl Guides in the first half. The team that came out was more like a pack of brownies.

His mum must run it.
Not even close.

Clarke was strong in the contest but not in my best

I like the looks of Begley. Has good strength over the ball, Pretty good lateral movement. Won most of the one on one contests he was in today. Doesn’t get enough of it yet though.

Trying to turn Langford into a midfielder does my head in. He has zero ability to attack when he gets the ball in the middle of the ground. He shows absolutely no signs of knowing how to play that role. Stick him in the forward line and leave him there, where his ability to read the play and strong marking is complemented by a good ability to kick straight for goal.

Draper, was good to watch the kid have a run today. Won some taps. Doesn’t play with a great deal of aggression though, and I think it is fair to say he has no idea what he is doing. Still, as a project ruck, he has height and got first hands to the ball so that’s a positive.

Watching Hocking today was hilarious. The Collingwood players did not want to go anywhere near him lest he hurt them.

Myers did well. Was strong, aggressive, and generally dominated the game. Still has no right hand side.

Stewart is worth giving a go in the seniors. I do not know if he is our best option, but he is killing it at VFL level. Has to be tried for at least a few weeks at some stage this year.

TBC just mucking around at this level. Could do pretty much whatever he wanted. Good to see.

Clarke was in at a lot of centre bounces. Not doing what he did at junior level yet.

Mutch was consistent and is very reliable, but has no wow.

Gleeson / Dea were both good but also both made abysmal errors at times.

I felt that overall our VFL side attacked the game today in a way that I haven’t seen from the AFL side for a while. Looked to have good spread from the contest as well. Backline was rarely troubled, and forwardline looked ok. Midfield was where we won the game, just better than them at everything midfieldish.

Mutch was one of the bog for mine. Sublime intercepts and very reliable.

Mutch is Hird like. Langford and Smack good although decision making often poor. TBC strong at bounces. Myers a beast and on field presence.

You’re cooked mate

He was close. Top 4 for mine

My top 5 would be-
Mckernan
Stewart
Mutch
Clarke
Bellchambers

Hocking very close too.

I’ve also probably missed a few aswell.

Draper has to do a lot to stand out right now: Tommy hogging 90% of the ruck, and the midfield have the options of Stewart and Smack to kick to.

Sammy D has plenty of time though.

That last quarter was Hocking’s best ever as a defender. As noted, no one wanted to get in his way.

He really looked the beast of old this arvo.

If they want to rest some after A Day for Melbourne, there’s a good 6 pack of guys who really put their hand up today IMO.

oh how could i forget jess white!

The tackling of Hocking and Bobcat, in particular, was a thing of beauty.

I think Begley will be the new Francis for VFL watchers (as hopefully Francis gets a permanent AFL gig). He could have got 10+ possessions in the first quarter if he was marginally cleaner with his hands. Having said that, he still looked good, ran straight lines, broke tackles and wasn’t afraid to take his shots on goal.

Kobe Mutch was everywhere but did turn it over a bit. He’s going to be special. Let’s hope all the senior boys that were there soak some of that up and carry it through till Tuesday. I remember the same thing happened last year

Where do you have Myers ranked?

Was he playing across half back or a wing? I saw him pop up a lot but wasn’t tracking him. He looked a good size and was good above his head so he has a few tools to work with.
