Round 5 Preview - Essendon vs St Kilda (19/4/14 7:40pm @ ES)

ESSENDON INJURIES:
Lauchlan Dalgleish (Achilles) TBC
Tom Bellchambers (ankle) test
Paul Chapman (ankle) test
Dustin Fletcher (soreness) test
Brendon Goddard (groin/adductor) test
Patrick Ryder (ankle) test
Courtenay Dempsey (hamstring) 1-2 weeks
Nick Kommer (knee) 1-2 weeks
Will Hams (hip) 2-3 weeks
Alex Browne (knee) season
ON THE BLOCK: A few Bombers may face the blowtorch after the side‘s surprise second-half fadeout against the Dockers. Dylan van Unen, Leroy Jetta and even the versatile Kyle Hardingham was unusually quiet.
ON THE CUSP: David Myers (ill) was a late withdrawal against Freo and will come back this week to play St Kilda. Ditto for Paul Chapman and Dustin Fletcher, one would think. Paddy Ryder should finally be ready to resume from his ankle injury, too. It‘s whether or not ‘Bomber‘ Thompson opts to give others a rest and keep playing some new names that will be of interest. Kurt Aylett has impressed for a few weeks in the VFL while draftee Orazio Fantasia was a standout at the weekend with four goals.
BEN BROAD‘S FORECAST: The Bombers will be relieved they‘re back home after playing in furnace-like conditions at Subiaco. Sunday‘s second half was a horror show for Essendon fans, but at least there shouldn‘t be any long-lasting effects. Mark Thompson will inject a few of his regulars back into the line-up for the Saints clash and the Bombers should be 3-2 in no time.

I see what you did there Ben Broad, you smart ■■■■, smary git!!

Settle down princess. Not everything is a potshot.

I think we're conditioned to reading the subtext now.

Essendon mystery virus?

Monday's Hun back page heading said we played in 32C heat.

We’re gonna WIN

Not everyone is getting up in arms either. Ealesy05 was quite possibly having a laugh.

If Zaka and Melksham were suffering from the virus, should we rest them up? Rest probably not the right word but if they haven't trained well last week probably best to give them the week off.

Resting players in Round 5 when we're only 2-2?
No.

Resting players in Round 5 when we're only 2-2?
No.

Especially since we had the bye in Round 3.

19 points are you fkg serious

Apparently the heat was felt against their will.. directly in the gut

Resting players in Round 5 when we're only 2-2?
No.

No, resting is when they are pretty much full fit but want to freshen them up.

I'm talking about the players who were hit with the bug and still had to play in the heat due to other injuries. Goodwin did say they will have a light week this week (mainly due to the heat on Sunday) but also because of the bug. So if Zaka and Melksham are still ill and will only be able to train on say Thursday after being bed ridden for 3 days, wouldn't it make sense to leave them out?

ESSENDON V ST KILDA, Etihad Stadium, Saturday April 19, 7.40pm (AEST)

Sportingbet says:  Essendon $1.09. St Kilda $8.00

Why watch?

Both sides will be looking to bounce back from heavy losses, but really the main reason to watch is to see what funny stuff Bomber Thompson comes up with in his post-match press conference.

Match notes
- Essendon has been hit with a mystery virus over the last week. On one day it's the flu, on another it's gastro. Either way, it's gone to the top with Bomber Thompson too sick to do his press conference on Tuesday. But if any club is capable of finding medication to fight off a virus, it's the Bombers.
- Not only does Essendon have the virus to deal with, they also have to recover from a six-day break and playing in the hot Perth conditions. The mercury was hovering at 33 degrees for much of Sunday afternoon's 53-point loss to Fremantle and combined with the illness, the Bombers may not exactly be at their best.
- Essendon only have to look at St Kilda to know about the potential effects of playing in Perth the week before. Having busted a gut against West Coast, the Saints were listless in an 86-point loss to Adelaide last Sunday.
- Essendon will welcome back some quality performers in Paul Chapman and Dustin Fletcher, who were rested last weekend.
- The Bombers are also looking at Paddy Ryder to return from a two-match absence with an ankle injury, while they're hopeful Brendon Goddard (groin) will be fit to face his old side.
- St Kilda have lost Nathan Wright (broken leg) for an extended period while David Armitage is doubtful due to a badly lacerated knee. Beau Maister may also be in the gun. But if those three players miss, the Saints have some quality replacements in ruckman Tom Hickey (corked calf), a late withdrawal last weekend and the classy duo of Jack Billings and Adam Schneider who both impressed in the VFL last weekend.

Say what?
"It's a combination of flu symptoms plus some gastro-type stuff," said Simon Goodwin, giving everyone a crystal-clear picture of the virus sweeping through the club.

Fantasy factoid
It has to be Dyson Hepell for the Bombers. Although he didn't get much help, Heppell shined with 35 possessions, seven clearances and 10 tackles.

Cold hard fact
Essendon have won five of the last six games against St Kilda, proving a thorn in Ross Lyon's side even when the Saints were a premiership contender.

Final word
This could be a particularly even contest at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, but the class of a fresh Paul Chapman and Dustin Fletcher may win out. Although they were lacklustre in the second half against Fremantle, Essendon have been among the form teams of the comp and should have too much firepower for the young Saints. That being said, the travel, the six-day break and the virus will probably drop the Bombers down a peg or two while the Saints will be smarting from their big loss to Adelaide. St Kilda have shown a harder, more competitive edge in the three matches prior to last weekend and Alan Richardson will be wanting to get back to that this weekend. But it's still Essendon by 18 points.

Don't post that ■■■■ in here.

I can confirm It was 32c

In the shade.

That Sportal dig is pretty ordinary.   Not very professional.  But what do you expect from a Collingwood supporter.

He's on Twitter, @Toffeepies

I think I'll say hello to him.

Why not just say hello to his employer instead and point out how cheap that was?

Then again sportal is a bit of a hole as far as websites go so he probably doesn't even get paid.

Sportal content is not welcome on this site.

If Zaka and Melksham were suffering from the virus, should we rest them up? Rest probably not the right word but if they haven't trained well last week probably best to give them the week off.

I had that virus a few weeks ago, has been going around.  Shat myself silly for four days but was fine after that.  No adverse impacts on my fitness, it went from ■■■■■ to ■■■■■.

It's crucial information like this that gets missed by the mainstream media.
Another win for blitz.
