Ryder will be back

Preview: Essendon v St Kilda

ESSENDON has had six days to recover from a crushing loss to Fremantle in the sweltering heat at Paterson Stadium, and to make matters worse a virus has struck down coach Mark Thompson and several players. The Bombers will be buoyed by the returns of veteran defender Dustin Fletcher, former Cat Paul Chapman, ruckman Patrick Ryder and David Myers. Star midfielder Brendon Goddard was subbed out of the loss with a groin injury, but is "highly doubtful" to play the Saints, according to assistant coach Simon Goodwin.

Meanwhile St Kilda has injury concerns of its own with David Armitage (knee) 50-50 to face the Bombers and young midfielder Nathan Wright to miss the next three months with a fractured leg.

WHERE AND WHEN: Etihad Stadium, Saturday April 26, 7.40pm

LAST FIVE TIMES
R4, 2013, Essendon 19.14 (128) d St Kilda 13.13 (91) at Etihad Stadium
R15, 2012, St Kilda 21.7 (133) d Essendon 8.14 (62) at Etihad Stadium

THE SIX POINTS
1. In the Bombers' easy win over the Saints in early 2013, they dominated the major stats categories. They won the disposals 411 to 324, they had 124 marks to 77 and were ahead in the inside 50s 59 to 52.
2. Essendon remains the No.1 team in 2014 for disposals, averaging 424.2 per game, while St Kilda is 12th at 349.2 per game.
3. These two sides have met at Etihad Stadium 17 times with Essendon having won 11 of those clashes.
4. The Bombers are second in 2014 for centre clearances with 61, while St Kilda has struggled and is ranked equal 12th with 49.
5. Essendon is the No.1 team in the League for disposal efficiency at 78 per cent while the Saints are ninth at 70.4 per cent.
6. St Kilda midfielder Leigh Montagna has been steadily climbing up the ranks this season. He started the year ranked No.34 overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings, thanks to Gatorade, and is now ranked No.26.

Prediction: Essendon by 19 points.

Leading the comp in DE eh?

Who is Whorethorn by the way?

Who is the ruck for the Saints? Hickey?
How will JC and JD fare?

Ryder will be back
One report says he will, another says he won't

Heading to the game this Saturday, it's my first game in 3 years as I've been living overseas. I'm a bit disappointed I won't get to see Goddard but very excited to see JD, chappy and Gleeson for the first time. It will also be the first game I have seen with Bomber as head coach.

We may only be playing the Aints but for me this is a big game and I'm super excited!!!!! Lid off!!! Essendon by 60.

P.S Where do we get p issed after the game to celebrate?

You can bet your bottom dollar goddard will play anzac day, he wont miss it
I reckon belly is a good chance for anzac day

Said he'd only play a half in vfl this weekend on the hanger. I'll be summed if they bring him straight in after that.

You would think so, especially since he has missed a fair bit of training.

But then I thought there is no way we would play Freo without an established ruck.......

Reckon you'll see Ryder return for Anzac Day and Belly the week after.  Bomber won't want to rush it, and I think we'll be far too top heavy against the Pies if we play both Belly and Ryder. Then we might see Joe Daniher 'rested' for a week or two post-Anzac Day, as Belly and Ryder get some match time into them. We simply can't play all three at once. It doesn't work - period.

Apparently Armitage is a certain non-starter, and he's become quite damaging for the Saints, so that is a bit of good news. I just can't see where the Saints are going to get goals from? We have more than enough options for Riewoldt. If the Dons come out and zip the ball around and keep up the pressure at the contests, this game could be over at quarter time.

I don’t think we should under estimate the recovery factor. Six day break after playing in that heat. This game might be closer than we expect. I still think we will win, but perhaps not quite as comfortably as we’d like.

BRING HIM IN

I get the same feeling too. Surely though only 4 games in and the fact AFL footballers have nothing else to do all day but train and recover, it shouldn't be too much of a factor you would think.
Can't see them wanting to drop this game and I think thr Saints have had tbeir purple patch for the year

Swing the axe after that ****
Out: Van Unen (terrible, not afl standard), Ashby (terrible), Colyer (terrible), Jetta (just go and never come back), Goddard (injured)
In: Ryder, Dempsey, Chapman, Fletcher, Myers

You really really have NO clue what so ever do you.
Would get more sense out of a monkey!!

LOL.

Yeah I don't think bringing Dempsey back when he's not recovered from a hamstring (not to mention his club imposed suspension) is a good idea.

Hope it ends up more like 19 goals instead of 19 points....

Hope it ends up more like 19 goals instead of 19 points....

Need to factor in the return trip from Perth, illness and question marks over key players.
One positive though is that St Kilda also have a 6 day break prior to their next game... which is also on Anzac Day against the Lions in New Zealand. Definitely a winnable game for the Saints.
Saints, like us, will have one eye looking towards their next game. This will be of interest when considering recovery and player rotations. They might even 'rest' a few in anticipation of that game in New Zealand.

And factor in the fact that StKilda is of shitstain quality.

ESSENDON INJURIES:
Lauchlan Dalgleish (Achilles) TBC
Tom Bellchambers (ankle) test
Paul Chapman (ankle) test
Dustin Fletcher (soreness) test
Brendon Goddard (groin/adductor) test
Patrick Ryder (ankle) test
Courtenay Dempsey (hamstring) 1-2 weeks
Nick Kommer (knee) 1-2 weeks
Will Hams (hip) 2-3 weeks
Alex Browne (knee) season
ON THE BLOCK: A few Bombers may face the blowtorch after the side‘s surprise second-half fadeout against the Dockers. Dylan van Unen, Leroy Jetta and even the versatile Kyle Hardingham was unusually quiet.
ON THE CUSP: David Myers (ill) was a late withdrawal against Freo and will come back this week to play St Kilda. Ditto for Paul Chapman and Dustin Fletcher, one would think. Paddy Ryder should finally be ready to resume from his ankle injury, too. It‘s whether or not ‘Bomber‘ Thompson opts to give others a rest and keep playing some new names that will be of interest. Kurt Aylett has impressed for a few weeks in the VFL while draftee Orazio Fantasia was a standout at the weekend with four goals.
BEN BROAD‘S FORECAST: The Bombers will be relieved they‘re back home after playing in furnace-like conditions at Subiaco. Sunday‘s second half was a horror show for Essendon fans, but at least there shouldn‘t be any long-lasting effects. Mark Thompson will inject a few of his regulars back into the line-up for the Saints clash and the Bombers should be 3-2 in no time.

ST KILDA INJURIES:
Sam Fisher (hamstring) test
Tom Hickey (calf) test
Sam Gilbert (foot) 4-6 weeks
Lewis Pierce (back) 5 weeks
Nathan Wright (broken leg) 10-12 weeks
ON THE BLOCK: We don‘t like to bag players for the sake of it here at the Barometer, but surely Beau Maister‘s time is up. He had eight disposals at 50 per cent efficiency yesterday and ended up playing in defence. Jimmy Webster (13 disposals at 38 per cent efficiency) had a horror day and Shane Savage was a bit better but still far from the player the Saints hoped for when they recruited him as part of the Ben McEvoy deal.
ON THE CUSP: The Saints‘ VFL side played a draw against Box Hill with Terry Milera kicking the goal to tie the scores. He also had 27 disposals and is the frame for his first senior hit-out of the year. Jack Billings and Tom Lee were given another week to prove their form and both did just that, Billings collecting 29 disposals and Lee kicking 3.5 from 14 disposals. Adam Schneider got through the game and No.19 draft pick Blake Acres showed a bit with 18 disposals after being promoted from the development side. Alan Richardson says Sam Fisher might make his return in the VFL next week.
AL PATON‘S FORECAST: Reality hit with a thud in the form of an 86-point hammering from the Crows. The Saints got their hands on the ball in close (drawing level on contested possessions and clearances) but were cut to ribbons by Adelaide‘s runners. The most disappointing aspect for Richardson would be how the likes of David Mackay and Brodie Smith were able to waltz through the middle of Etihad Stadium unchallenged. Richo will have to get his troops to regroup for the first time before another big challenge against Essendon on Saturday night. Then it‘s a flight over the ditch to face Brisbane in Wellington on Anzac Day.

On the Ryder thing. Yeah/Nah.
