Russia invades Ukraine - 2 - from 4 May 2022

Excellent post from Katz. Great viewing for those who are interested in history, philosophy or the modus operandi of right-wing fascist dictatorships.

Thread identifying Russian trench fortifications protecting the Nova Khakovka dam in Kherson. Blows my mind how much detail can be obtained with commercial satellites.

I’m guessing there’s a whole art (science) to defensive/trench positioning, but I’ll be buggered if I can tell from that.

Not the real plan, obviously. russians will not fall for it.

Crimea will be a tough nut to crack. The isthmus to the peninsula is very narrow and is partly a bog, so it has limited avenues of approach which makes it easier to lay out an effective defence and the Russians have had years to build it up. And if they haven’t been working on it after the last few weeks, then they are incompetent and insane.

The Ukrainians could always avoid the isthmus and assault via air or sea, but that has immense inherent risks as well as a massive logistic, planning and training liability.

Crimea relies on upstream flows of drinking water. Would suggest this will get cutoff again when Kherson is retaken.

Looks staged?

Good discussion about it in the comment section on this post

Petro-politics: Saudis choose self-interest. Putin benefits. Price of fuel to go up.

Greek owned ships have been doing ship to ship oil transfers from Russian oil tankers coming from the Black Sea.
The transfers are taking place in international waters off the Greek coast.
Reportedly, the Greek Government cannot enforce sanctions outside its territorial waters.
Allegedly, most of the oil is going to Western Europe.

Surprise of the decade there. This war is making me even more cynical than before, didn’t think that was possible.

Kidnapping all the children isn’t a defensive strategy you use when things are going well.

They are going to use the kids as human shields.

Qatar doesn’t want any political boycott of the World Cup.
May explain the recent FM statement on Russia’s invasion, a slight shift beyond neutral, following recent contact with western counterparts, identified on the FM’s site

Potentially blackmail. If Ukraine takes Kherson back, the kids don’t go home to their parents.

Typical russian b#st@rd move either way. I suppose at least they will be out of harm’s way if and when it comes down to the battle for the city.

Like the ones they have already kidnapped, and were recently reported to “love Russia now”.
