That’s highly debatable
When Ukraine and its supporters put so much time and high level resources into UN debates and outcomes……
They go beyond Carlton Bluebirders waving their Pom Poms.
ADD
When 141 countries formally record that Russia should withdraw and that they are committed to respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, as defined in the UN Charter, Ukraine would not be dismissive of the resolution on the date of Russian invasion
I suppose the latest resolution could be seen as a psychological and morale boost for Ukraine and its supporters.
The first two points of the esteemed diplomat’s message have already been made before, in previous resolutions. The third is self-evident outside the UN. Beyond that it is unclear what, if any, practical effect it will have. Putin isn’t complying with it. China doesn’t respect it.
Interesting to see that even Cuba abstained.
I think no change from last time.
Within our region, Laos and Vietnam remain among the against.
If anyone is interested, the Latvian guy said ‘ idi nahui’. Literally means ‘go ■■■■’ however in this connotation means ‘go ■■■■ yourself.’
Whilst my overall command of the Russian language is crap - I am top notch at swearing.
When some warn against political fatigue and potential shifts from an outcome less than Ukraine’s territorial integrity - to a peace that would delver concessions to Russia - a 141 vote is not to be sniffed at
That’s how high diplomacy works and at a practical level, affords ongoing cover for the supply of military equipment and other military support to Ukraine.
To note that, as reported in that SMH article, Australia has moved beyond supplying non lethal military equipment ( such as Bushmasters), to howitzers and ammunition
Interesting dynamics in the UNGA debate.
Germany was the proposer of the resolution, speaking slots shuffled for Germany to be the last to speak ( a view that it would carry more force and a signal to all that Germany cannot be misrepresented as the EU laggard)
Hungary had an each way bet in its speech, but still voted in favour.
A long read from mainstream media. Still … chokes me up.does Mariupol.
In addition to UNGA resolutions shoring up military support (and economic sanctions on Russia) for Ukraine - which would not otherwise enable Ukrainians to stand alone on their land - the UN specialised agencies coordinate humanitarian assistance to civilians to survive on their land, including UN reps on the ground. Also working with ICRC in tracing missing civilians and military for Ukraine families l
Goes beyond psychological and morale building.
Thanks for doing so!!! Looks VERY helpful. Will digest over next few days.
A huge price to pay, but the 3 month holdout did tie up Russian military resources that might otherwise have taken over more territory.
Now for resources to prevent captured Mariupol from becoming a Sea of Azov military base for Russia to defend its territorial gains on the land bordering the Sea of Azov.
