Because Russian generals are more focused on their personal position rather than the success of the war. This forces Wagner to be subservient to Russian forces. The army is providing the support instead of Wagner being self sufficient.
So I think itโs a mix of Prigozin โ โ โ โ โ โ โ off the newly elevated generals and losing status along with a real overall shortage of ammunition.

I suspect the US views arenโt supportive of staying in Bakhmut, but they know the benefit of public support for morale of the troops. If they publicly question the defence, the troops will lose faith in their orders and become less effective.

Going by media reports, Russians and US talking down the drone incident, while both standing their ground.
Reports from the US side that the fuel dumping on the drone was deliberate, but that the collision may have been accidental.
Russian reports to the effect that responses need to be proportionate, important that the two major nuclear powers maintain dialogue.
Reports from the US side that if Russia does retrieve the drone, measures had been taken to ensure that it would not provide anything of value to Russia
