RBA finally bans credit, debit card surcharges

RBA has banned surcharges on debit and credit card payments, so businesses can no longer add extra fees at checkout, consumers get clearer pricing, while banks and merchants absorb the cost shift through lower interchange fees and possible price adjustments elsewhere.
Eliminating hidden charges will save consumers $1.6 billion annually.

Get a can of paint custom mixed at Bunnings then leave it in another aisle.

Come back a week later and buy it off the miss tints / bargain rack

Is what you could do to save a few $$ :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I thought it kicked in today?

Most of the changes are 1st October.

Expect credit card bonuses to diminish, and fees to rise…

I know some suppliers are removing the ability to pay your bills on Credit or debit card.

Just use cash

On financial services - it’s nearly always better to renew your insurance premiums annually.

You should pay your loans off weekly.

I haven’t quite stood there and bought the giftcard while i’m instore yet.

I do it before! Derrrr

its nearly always better to change insurance providers annually….or at elast get a comparison quote and see if originally provider can match.

Oh I mean pay the premium yearly. Premiums nearly always only go up.

So just prepay the whole year - your premium is then only recalculated once.

sure shopping around is also good practice

Never pay for bags at the self-checkout. Just take them.

Ok, I guess that’s technically less of a bargain and more of a theft. But whatever. It saves money.

Buy a makita tool set that comes with a free tool via redemption. Scan your receipt and return the tool pack unopened for a refund. Send in your receipt for your free tool.

Kind of a scam more than a bargain.

In the UK, Moneysavingexpert does an incredible job in this area. Is there an Australian equivalent?

Some recent wins for me:

  • Changing Mobile contract - Now pay £5/month, down from £25
  • Changing home insurance provider - Saving £250/year
  • Changing Energy Provider - Saving ~£50/,month
  • Switching bank account to competitor - £250 sign-on bonus
  • Renegotiate car insurance - Saving £200 annually
  • Using gift cards for groceries ~£20/month
  • Using gift cards / discounts for other purchases ~£10-£30/month

Cancelling unused subscriptions also a huge opportunity for many

I get careful with gift cards. They are useful for stuff you guarantee drain like supermarkets. But otherwise your locking your money into one vendor.

if you have a home loan, churning that can be a BIG saver. Your acquiring lender makes it easy
