Sean Murphy - fitness muggins - well… bye

not that im elite, but you are right.

Assuming you don’t pile on the weight or become a full time smoker or get ill.

When I played Junior football for the western jets I could run 5km’s in just under 20 minutes.
Many years later, Although I cant replicate that time because I no longer run regularly it only takes me around 2-3 weeks of consistent running to start hitting really good times again. Its something that stays with you for a long time regardless of if you are running every day/ few days.

Concur.

As a youngster I couldn’t run 5km.

And now, with 2-3 weeks training I still couldn’t run 5km.

So yep, it can stay with you.

That’s because muscles maintain memory.

Not for many years they don’t.

I can still kick a footy both left and right foot through the goals at 35 metres. Haven’t played footy at all but Jacky Clarke taught me to kick as a little kid. Everyone now and again I’ll have a kick with the kids and just to prove its not a fluke and I’m not just rsc. This kids still rubbish me about it. Last time I did it I did my back with three of them jumping all over me so, I think my playing with this kids footy days are over. They were laughing their heads off until they realised I was hurt.

There is a difference between physiological conditioning required to maintain a certain level of aerobic fitness vs learned motor skills networks. Muscle memory, predominately, refers to the latter.

Essendon’s strength and conditioning boss explains how the Bombers are chasing down Richmond and Collingwood

ESSENDON’S fitness boss Sean Murphy says the Bombers will need “two-to-three years” to transform their training levels to match competition powerhouses Richmond and Collingwood.

Murphy, who took over as the Bombers’ head of strength and conditioning ahead of last year’s pre-season, had previously worked with Hawthorn, including during the Hawks’ three-peat premiership era.

He said his first pre-season at Tullamarine had shown him the Bombers know how to train at a high level, but need to find a better balance with their approach.

“They train bloody hard. They almost went too hard,” he told the club’s website.

"They had an appetite to go bull-at-a-gate but they couldn’t control themselves. I think the good teams like Richmond, like Collingwood, like the time I was at Hawthorn, these teams that know when to go, and when to pull back a little bit and control themselves, are the teams that play their footy the same way.

“But they’re also the ones who train the same way and can get the best out of their bodies.”

Murphy served an apprenticeship under renowned former Hawks fitness boss Andrew Russell, who is now leading Carlton’s fitness regime. He said the pulling the Bombers’ back has been the biggest adjustment as the club comes to terms with his methods.

“In reflection it’s actually been a real positive from the group because it’s trying to teach them the other way – that there’s times that we don’t want to go [as hard],” he said.

"It [might be] an aerobic session or if it’s a session that we just want to consolidate a little bit because we’ve got another session coming up, we’ve got to be able to pull back.

“I’ve noticed probably three or four times throughout pre-season they just couldn’t hold back. That’s my biggest challenge.”

Essendon endured an injury-riddled summer, which included 15 off-season surgeries for players, including important Bombers Dyson Heppell, Cale Hooker, Michael Hurley, Orazio Fantasia and David Zaharakis.

Murphy said the club’s injury levels were now “in a pretty good space” as the competition works through its shutdown period due to the coronavirus crisis, with Joe Daniher (groin) the only senior regular who will be touch-and-go to play if games resume around mid-year.

Dyson Heppell (foot), Patrick Ambrose (knee) and Cale Hooker (hip) were also unavailable through injury for Essendon’s round one win over Fremantle.

Murphy said it would take time to see training adjustments come into effect.

“We’ve got a fair bit more into their bodies this year from a running load but also from a footy perspective it’s been ramped up a little bit as well. That will take a bit of time adapting to that and being able to actually do more of those sessions repeatedly across time,” he said.

“I’d say [over] a two-to-three year period hopefully we’re able to see the benefits of those sessions.”

I read this last night and it made complete sense. We ducked at the start of the year because we went too hard, were good mid year as we were fit, then were horrid at the end because we were too tired.

Even the training is inconsistent.

Just can’t get anything right this club in terms of onfield success hopefully that changes under Murphy and the coaching of Rutten and Caracalla

This guy fills me with a lot of confidence that the fitness and conditioning side of things will be fine. As he said, it’s a 2-3 year build on this. The club, give it credit, made a number of good off-field appointments between seasons. Hopefully we see the result being on-field success in the coming seasons.

it’s an absolute indictment on crowe that we were so far behind the 8 ball

Agree. The decision to play a raft of players injured late last season just to scrape into the finals and get belted Week 1 resulted in delays on post-season surgery and had them going through restricted pre-seasons. In the end the impact of it might be inconsequential given the current situation with the season suspended for now.

Imagine if Woosha had said the same thing.

He did say the same thing when he came in.

Every new regime asks to wait 2-3 years to be judged.

Maybe except Knights who was bullish.

If he said it at the end of his first pre-season most of us would have thought, “That sounds reasonable.” If he said it now after completing his fourth season (two compromised), there would be a few more raised eyebrows. And rightly so as he should have to explain what progress he believes has been made and what areas are still deficient and why.

Your body endures - it’s been training itself for years

To be fair you may get what you pay for.

But who knows.

With regards to what? Fitness?
