Neither. I think the list is in a decent spot for a crack soon (2-3 years), but probably no sooner. It’s now just a matter of developing and refining what we have.
And?
We aren’t in the window now with these blokes.
I think we have a decent bunch of guys that will be close to to or in their peak in 2-3 years time, throw in a few more FA’s or trades and who knows.
do people claim it was quinn’s fault in 2001 that we weren’t fit enough to beat brissy ?
or was it sheedy’s/coaches/player fault for playing injured ?
the simple thing is, the fitness guy can only
A get people to a certain level of fitness
B say they are right to play
the rest is and always should be on the players.
the simple fact is there were poor decisions made by all across the last few years, but crowe cops it unfairly.
he didn’t pick heppell when he could barely run, nor did a pick a backman in a final to play when he couldn’t even lift his arm beyond waste height.
I’ll agree though you get what you pay for, and maybe the only difference between crowe and murphy is perception of credentials, and how one perceives their importance.
cos in this thread you have a player saying he and guys claiming it’s the hardest preseason they’ve ever had.
then you have the fitness guy saying the hardest thing is holding the players back from going full tilt all the time.
but it’ll always be hard to figure out how much of it was crowe then, and how much will be murphy now.
in reality cos again if the whole coaching groups philosophy changes, is that crowes fault ?
best example would be if crowe was still with us this year, and the same mentality of the coaches was there, heppell and hooker play rd1 this year even in their under done state.
do you think we get the win in that situation ?
on the flip side Belly was picked under questionable circumstances re lack of fitness, and he blew up something shocking in the second half, so does that mean murphy doesn’t have them fit enough ?
The only guys out of those 5 who are still actually important players to us are Heppell and Hurley. Anything we get out of the other 3 is a bonus.
There is a strong case that Phillips is the equal or better than TBell. There is also Draper who will hopefully go past both if there is more footy this year
Zaka is a fringe player now. He may be in the leadership group and he’ll probably be in the team most weeks when he’s 100% fit, but he’s not actually critical to our results.
Hooker is past it. Whether we like it or not, I reckon the coaches are planning without him and if he plays any more good games that is a bonus.
Hurley will still be important this season, mainly for his leadership and directing play more than anything. But we’re really in good shape in the backline with Francis, Zerk, Ambrose and Ridley. Just need to find a good taller guy to play on tall KPPs.
The foot issues are the only thing that’s preventing Hepp having another 5-6 years left in his career. He’s 28 this year, so not super-old. The guys you mention as being retired/past it are all high wage earners. They leave and that opens up a ton of cap space. I think 2020 could be T-Bell’s final year, and if Joe does end up leaving what’s that, some $1.5 Million off the payroll? Say Zaka, Hooker and Hurls are done within 2-3 seasons, there probably another $2 Million. You can go after some big FA targets, or easily recontract all our best young talent and save up for a reboot. I don’t think the ■■■■ will fall out of the team when we have to transition away from the older guys. But, we need to get some looks at the first round of the draft again soon because of the trades we made across the 2017-18 trade periods we haven’t had a first round pick since McGrath.
I agree with everything you said except I would swap your Hurley comments for hooker and vice versa. I think hooker is more capable of playing good footy than Hurley is these days. Just a question of getting him healthy
