Tennis Australia‘s profit halved
Tennis Australia‘s profit halved and the organisation forced to dip into its cash reserves to cover a large cost increase, including a record amount of prize money for this year‘s Australian Open.
The organisation‘s net surplus for the 2013 financial year dropped to $1.6 million from almost $3.1 million the year before, according to documents lodged this month with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
Total revenue for the organisation reached $181 million, compared with $172 million in 2012.
However, total expenses rose by $12 million to more than $182 million, including an almost $8 million increase in operations and events expenses.
Prize money for the Australian Open was increased by $4 million to a record $30 million, a move hailed at the time by the players, who each also received additional expense payments.
The three other grand slams, Wimbledon, the French Open and the US Open, subsequently increased their pots, meaning Tennis Australia will likely move to further increase prize money for the 2014 Australian Open next January.
Net financial income of about $2.6 million, incorporating interest income on investments and an increase on the value of financial assets, saved Tennis Australia from posting a deficit for year.
Tennis Australia‘s cash reserves dropped almost $6 million during the year, $3.3 million of which was used in operating activities and another $2.7 million to purchase property, plant and equipment.
Total reserves now stand at $15.1 million and net assets are $32.5 million.
Outgoing Tennis Australia chief executive Steve Wood told The Australian Financial Review in August that revenue for 2013-14 is expected to increase another 10 per cent for the 2013 result to about $220 million.
Wood will be replaced by Craig Tiley, Tennis Australia‘s director of tennis and the Australian Open tournament director, at the end of September.
Tennis Australia‘s new broadcast deal with Seven West Media, worth about $35 million annually, will begin from the 2015 Australian Open.

Totally agree. While our overall defensive side improved under Hird, the one-on-one ability of defenders certainly improved under wellman.
