Loved the comment by their list manager, saying they wanted to keep Lewis. Yeah, nah you didn't. You tried to ship him off before he even knew about it. Don't bullshit through it, just admit you're planning for the future rather than trying to save face through the media.
No Ross, it was a “no-brainer”, to let them finish their careers elsewhere:
"Clarkson says the process that resulted in two four-time premiership players leaving has not damaged the Hawthorn culture but strengthened it.
And he says the Hawks’ bold recruiting decisions will keep the club at the “top echelon” of the ladder next season."
“Sports show some things never change
AS Hawthorn, the AFL and Racing Victoria prove, good governance and professionalism is the difference between failure and success, writes Jeff Kennett”
If it was up to you Jeff, Clarkson would have been gone before his 2nd premiership.
Hawks have a history dumping cooked players. Are we so sure Lewis and Mitchell are going to be any good next year. That for me tells me if there movement was correct and will have an impact.
Either of them kill it and a newby squibs it. Watch out.

Which is why I’m curious to know how or why they are so confident in fixing JOM. I can’t remember a single player that they’ve fixed their injury problems, infact as you say they ship them off pretty quickly.
there’s no easy way to do what needs and needed to be done, but to actively push champions of your club out, surely has to have negative repercussions.
You can’t build a team first mentality, and stay with us for less money cos we will win premierships culture if you cull everyone pretty much the second their used by date is done.
Sure they went out in straight sets this year, but with 6 odd weeks of the season left they were on top of the ladder, couple of lucky plays and they are in a prelim instead of playing week 2.
They weren’t that far off it this year, so to push out so many top line players, off up so many players for trade just to get 3 players on, on decent coin has to have a negative effect on clarko’s ability to keep and maintain that aura the hawks had.
Said it before, but rioli as an example, surely if someone comes a knocking next year with decent coin, he’d have to be stupid not to jump, as with any other half decent player who has put the team first.
They may well find that pushing some out of the club will backfire and ones they don’t want to leave, will start too.

(Fk. me. Why do I even care.)
Maybe Kennett was right because the coach he would have brought in might have done better than Clarkson.

I’ll admit I’m not a ‘footy expert’, and I am unreasonably interested in the Hawks’ list management strategy probably because they beat us to getting Jaeger O’Meara. But I am genuinely puzzled. Not only have they traded out their 2 best (by B & F result…not always accurate) players, they have delisted another 8. Granted some of those are rookie-listed players but it still removes the depth from their side. Only 4 players didn’t play seniors this year, but their current list size is 32?? This depth will take years to replace, and can only really be done through the draft. They will probably get some more big-money free agents to sign with them next year but that will just exacerbates the issue of depth…they can’t afford to pay any of those sort of players because they are paying a few players a large proportion of their list.
Let’s roll forward 12 months. Hodge, Burgoyne and maybe even Gibson go. This will release a good bit of salary to direct towards new FAs (discussed above), but even if they are directly replaced by three other bodies, they haven’t addressed the depth issue on their list. They have no pick in the first round. They have GWS’ pick in the second round which is likely to be late. They have deliberately taken themselves out of this year’s draft which is supposedly the deepest draft in years.
Everyone talks about Clarko as though he is a genius. He’s won 4 flags. I get that. But Warren Buffett is the world’s greatest investor and by his own admission he does stupid ■■■■. No one is infallible and unless there is something I haven’t seen I genuinely think that the Hawks are betting it all on one last shot at a flag (where I expect them to fail miserable, particularly if JOM doesn’t get on the park), then are likely to be irrelevant for a decade.
I’m not sorry about that one bit. I just wonder why there are no journalists asking the hard questions about Hawthorn.

Because they have used up all their hard questions in the last 4 years during the EFC saga
IMO Clarkson doesn’t believe they can win the flag in 2017
When does his contract expire again? 2019? Can see him leaving the incoming coach a Doggies type list as a kind of legacy
