Season 2016 - Hawthorn

I'll admit I'm not a 'footy expert', and I am unreasonably interested in the Hawks' list management strategy probably because they beat us to getting Jaeger O'Meara. But I am genuinely puzzled. Not only have they traded out their 2 best (by B & F result...not always accurate) players, they have delisted another 8. Granted some of those are rookie-listed players but it still removes the depth from their side. Only 4 players didn't play seniors this year, but their current list size is 32?? This depth will take years to replace, and can only really be done through the draft. They will probably get some more big-money free agents to sign with them next year but that will just exacerbates the issue of depth...they can't afford to pay any of those sort of players because they are paying a few players a large proportion of their list.

Let’s roll forward 12 months. Hodge, Burgoyne and maybe even Gibson go. This will release a good bit of salary to direct towards new FAs (discussed above), but even if they are directly replaced by three other bodies, they haven’t addressed the depth issue on their list. They have no pick in the first round. They have GWS’ pick in the second round which is likely to be late. They have deliberately taken themselves out of this year’s draft which is supposedly the deepest draft in years.

Everyone talks about Clarko as though he is a genius. He’s won 4 flags. I get that. But Warren Buffett is the world’s greatest investor and by his own admission he does stupid ■■■■. No one is infallible and unless there is something I haven’t seen I genuinely think that the Hawks are betting it all on one last shot at a flag (where I expect them to fail miserable, particularly if JOM doesn’t get on the park), then are likely to be irrelevant for a decade.

I’m not sorry about that one bit. I just wonder why there are no journalists asking the hard questions about Hawthorn.

Journalists are stupid and 99% of them are 12 months behind the reality of what’s going on.
Late next season when the Hawks are on the verge of missing the 8 ( or well out of contention for the 8), they’ll start to ask what’s wrong and question their trading

IMO Clarkson doesn't believe they can win the flag in 2017 When does his contract expire again? 2019? Can see him leaving the incoming coach a Doggies type list as a kind of legacy

Doggies when Eade left?

McCartney.
It seems kinda obvious he’s going full cull/rebuild mode

Really? Without any draft picks I don’t think it’s going to be a very successful rebuild.

Might have more difficulty attracting FAs too if they perceive that they’re not going to be the Hawthorn players with medals.

It’ll be interesting how the potential tradees view the place, particularly for next year. Guys like Puopolo, Hartung, Breust, Langford et al.

Depends whether you rate the unknown of the draft over the (relatively) known quantity of Mitchell and O’Meara.
They would definitely want to grab a couple of decent FA or restricted FA in the next couple of years though as you’re right they do look shallow in the draft unless they trade whatever picks they do get in the next year or 2 for multiple picks

No it doesn’t. The age profile of the doggies was (and is) very young…look at the ages for the GF time. They had loads of first rounders coming into their prime. The FAs by definition will be at least 25 so won’t be young and ready for moulding. And to turn one pick into 2 they will have to get two much lower picks. Given their first pick will be about 40 next year, the odds of turning this into something productive is very low. By my reckoning he will have the complete opposite of what the dogs had. Particularly so if they have to pay $$ for FAs to come in. A disproportionate amount of the salary cap will be paid to a few players, meaning there won’t be much left except for bargain bin DFAs and late round draftees

It’s going to be interesting to see their list strategy here. They’ve cut deep in a year they enter the draft at pick 88. That’s not a position from which to rebuild. The core young talent is gone from the draft by then. or are they picking older players who could be depth, coming in as a role player when injury strikes a senior player?

I suppose its now dawned on Clarko that you can only defy gravity for a time, then the force of equalisation will drag you down, whether you have level 4 coaching accreditation or not.

They are chasing Dicky Henderson hahaha

They’ve taken a gamble that can lead to 10-15 years of mediocrity.

I want to see what happens over the next two years when they try and poach players but don’t have anywhere near the required picks or points. The AFL can’t cover them forever.

If they go after Martin or Fyfe need those clubs to match the bids and then it’s game over for hawthorn.

Are you kidding me?
With their ‘luck’ they’re likely to walk him through to the PSD and get him for nothing.

We already know they’re willing to trade contracted players away to get what they want.

Clarkson appears to be going down the path ESS did in 02-05. Albeit with a better choice of players to bring in.

They appear content with have a core group of superstars that vary the workload and win tigh games. Then they roll in a bunch of role player to fill space. The question is whether they can fill the holes faster in superstars like Mitchell faster than they loose them.

They are not going to attract much talent through the draft so their options are now somewhat constrained. Get the ins correct and snag a few role players that become more and you would they won’t be that bad.

Omeara struggles on the park, Mitchell hates a tag and the role players turn out to be junk. And the fall could be quite spectacular.

It’s why I firmly believe we should be into Riolis ear. With a bad year at the Hawks we might snag him at 28 and get 3-4 good years of footy out of him whilst we contend.

Hard pressed to get two bigger wankers in the one pic. I suppose not, but you know what I mean.

Hawthorn just drafted “Mitchell Lewis”…Classic

Hawthorn just drafted "Mitchell Lewis"...Classic

Despairing Hawthorn list management department has been gripped by nostalgia in what can be seen as more of a drafting freudian slip than a meaningful draft selection; Hawthorn opt for a player whose name is more familiar than formidable.

Of course the media scribes are never willing to write off the genius Clarko whose hand guides all things Hawthorn, as we see below.

The Hawthorn draft was and will always be a complete disaster, irrespective of how anyone seeks to paint it.

Emma Quayle:
HAWTHORN Harry Morrison (74), Mitchell Lewis (76)
Not a bad result for the Hawks, who sat around for a very long time before getting started. They had hinted they might look for older players (and Jack Fitzpatrick should come back in as a rookie) but clearly there were some kids high up on their list still available when their first pick came around. Morrison is a rebounding defender with a tough streak, who kicks well and runs hard. He’s very good value at pick. Mitchell Lewis (will he wear number 53?) is more of a speculative selection. He played some good school footy leading up to one huge game for the Calder Cannons, where he had 33 possessions and took 12 marks. He’s a forward-ruckman the club will be able to spend time developing.

Not a bad result, based on where they started. Kids high up on their list? Really, was Mc Cluggage on their list?

Callum "tombstone " Twomey.
Nobody really knew who might get through to the Hawks’ picks, but Morrison is a nice fit. He’s a natural footballer who reads the play well, uses it nicely from defence and has some good bloodlines (as the cousin of Brisbane Lions midfielder Tom Rockliff). He has a tough streak, too, that will suit the Hawks’ uncompromising style. The irony was lost on nobody that the Hawks picked up Mitchell Lewis (after controversially trading champion duo Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis last month) with their second and final pick at No.76, but the tall prospect will be given time to develop. His six-mark haul against Bendigo in August was enough to give recruiters an insight into his traits.

Not so sure that Mitchell Lewis will be given time to develop. More likely he will get the "last in first out " treatment, when Hawthorn spins the revolving door again to make list spots available for next years trade period.

Great news with Roughead being given the all clear. One of the few Hawks I actually like. Hope that is the end of it for him

For every cousins there’s a Roughead

So their Football Manager was a pedo

“Family Club”

???

Their football manager recently died,

it turns out his son ousted him as a paedophile and charges were about to be laid (if the age article is true).

Someon showed me how the creep used to post on a hawks forum.

Of course they are all ‘he didn’t get a trial so let’s not judge based on these accusations’ but go into their hird thread and it’s open slather about his suicide etc.
