Season 2017 - Gold Coast

As much as I dislike him he is easily still in any side in the comps best 22. In a team like Geelong he would be more than capable of 40+ goals as a forward with bursts in the midfield

“Obstacles” - meaning they aren’t givinv their currently contracted B&F winner away for peanuts.

There is no way Cats will come to party on picks/players for someone who might only be a 1yr proposition, so more value to GC to keep him up there next year.

GC need Ablett on field from a marketing sense.

Just need to allow him extra time throughout year to be down in Melb with family as he requires.

I can’t see him just retiring with $600k sitting there for one more year of footy.

This media campaign is really subtle, isn’t it?

“Oh, is it? Okay then”

~ Everyone

“Almost” impossible

They’ll make it happen. Geelong seem able to get whoever the fark they want. And sadly, have to give them credit for being farking good at it

HUMOUR

If he had planned to front load his contract so he could get the bulk of his money early and then leave before his contract runs out he deserves to cop it

G Abblett crap? Spock, are you out of your Vulkan mind?

Oh please, he DIDN’T front load his contract, the club did, in fact all parties were happily involved in the discussion. It’s not like he walked up there and put a gun to their heads and said “do this or you die”. As it was highlighted earlier there was a VERY strong reason why they frontloaded his contract and it had everything to do with salary cap and age of list.

Maybe go bak and read those posts again.

Rumour the suns have approached hodge to see if he’ll courageously play with them next year as an onfield coach.

That would be stupid.

#34 or a young cusp of 22 player.
Or cry into your beer, Geelong.

Should be clear to everyone that Geelong is just being altruistic. They are just trying to help a poor kid from the Gold Coast to make it in this big old world. They are all about supporting his family and ensuring the sport of football gives a little back to the community. They have a history of giving back, when poor little Paddy was stuck in Adelaide, it was them that went and saved him. Against all odds, they brought the kid home and as footy karma would have it, turned out he could kick a footy as well. Everyone here is so cynical.

God… this club is an absolute disaster

Front loading doesn’t actually mean that the player’s actual pay decreases each year right?

Surely it’s purely a calculation for salary cap purposes as in:

Actual pay: $1m, $1m, $1m
Salary cap: $1.2m, $1m, $0.8m

No, pretty sure they pay the contracted amount each year.

Well yeah if it’s in the contract. But can’t you spread the contract payments notionally for cap purposes?

Nope. You have to literally hand out to the player each year the amount you said in their contract you would pay them that year, and you have to report that (with receipts!) to the AFL so they can check that your total payments each year fall within the salary cap.

There is no ‘notionally’, no book-keeping tricks, nothing like that. You pay your players strictly according to the letter of the contract and the salary cap.
