JUH’s problem is Bruce playing well. Young guns English & Naughton aren’t going to be shifted. Bruce needs to either be pushed back, or moved on for JUH to play regularly. Shache is obviously a bust.
I appreciate that it’s a tough side to break into but surely they could select him for an easy game (Norf or probably even us) to see how he goes. If he shines, great for Dogs and if he doesn’t then JUH will see for himself why he’s down the pecking order.
Dropping who?
Schache played round 7
The week before in the VFL he kicked 1.2 while JUH kicked 5.2
But yeah, dogs forward line is good enough to justify him not being selected
Round 10 against the Saints was another opportunity with no English.
I think it’s a bit tough watching all the other tall early draft picks, including Reid, get a run at least once before mid year.
Bevo’s people skills on display again?
Schache.
Schache doesn’t figure into their fwd line.
Oops. My mistake. Totally agree that they are a strong side but if I was a WB fan I would be gutted if he left because of lack of opportunity.
Absolutely!
It’s not a bad problem to have. Can they fit Bruce into their backline? Woods is on the way out. Upsets their balance a little. Richards is quality, and not getting a game. Wallis, though derided a bit in here, is also a valuable and player - mid/fwd - not playing. Lipinski has a lot more upside, but isn’t playing.
IMO - JUH has done enough to justify selection once in the first half of the year. I can understand Schache being picked early in the year. He would be on the edge in terms of keeping his spot on the list. The Dogs may have wanted to give him one last go before JUH gets picked.
Also Schache has been in the system for a number of years compared to a kid playing in his first year. young KPPs need to be protected. Look what happened with players like Josh Fraser and Jack Watts who were fed to the wolves early in their first year. It has an adverse effect at the back end of their career.
It’s entirely contextual. Watts was shoved into a team of youth and Melbourne were a basket case.
Look at Thilthorpe, McDonald, even Jones (technically debut year). They’re having immediate impact, maybe not tearing games apart yet but they are hastening their development by playing them the right way.
If a first year player wants to leave because he hasnt played a game in the first 3 months tells you all about the player that you need to know. Get rid of them. Stat.
LOL, last week I asked my Bulldog mate if he had JUH’s Twitter details, said I was going to tell him to get into Dodo’s ear, be part of the most exciting bunch of young kids in years and that he would have played all 11 games , I’m running with it…and taking credit
Naughton back is the obvious one.
Opportunity’s been there to pick him for at least a couple of games.
English has played most of the year forward. Lewis Young’s got a couple of games as a utility tallish guy, Jordon Sweet 5, Schache has played one.
For whatever reason, the Dogs said before the season that they weren’t going to pick him, so they’re not. They must have their reasons.
Although on the surface it is, long term, is that the right option? Such a versatile player, Naughton.
Bruce will be 30 soon. English is a part-time fwd/ruck. I would think that Naughton/JUH + English would be their plan going forward.
I think there’s more chance Naughton is a long-term CHB than JUH is a long-term VFL player!
Tricky balance.
I’m just not sure why they made the early call on him.
Beveridge has form with favouring some players over others it has to be said.
Don’t most coaches?
My cousin’s son played for Melbourne under Neale Daniher. They thought Neale was big playing favourites…some guys would play four shockers and stay in, others would play one middling game and get dropped.
Sheeds was a shocker for it too…Richards vs Henneman being a later instance.
