Trouble is there’s a good chance they will drop out of the 8 next season

Swans have plenty of good young players, they will make the 8 next year. Besides almost being unbeatable at home they are getting better playing at the G - they did knock out last year’s premiers in the finals there.
They just fell apart on the big day, happened to us in 1983

Sydney delisted James Bell, Sam Naismith and Ben Ronke. Naismith was looking terrific and even pushed T Nankervis out of the side but 3x knee recos + several complications later have put an end to his AFL career. James Bell does well as a mid in the seconds but he’s no match in the seniors. B Ronke apart from that one time he was, isn’t clean enough at AFL level. Most of the time, he fumbles 100% of the time. Can’t see either of them featuring again on a senior list.

10 years 30 games, one brilliant finals series

Is that a great career or an awful one? Can be a fine line, sometimes.

Does he fumble and stumble as much as this sentence?

The sentence is fine, your ability to comprehend what’s in front of you is where the problem lies.

Comprehension aside … Seems your Swannies becoming a little brutal up there. Good servants needing support then bang. Something missing culturally if you ask me.

Because getting to a GF and in fact a few recently is to be admired and Bombers can’t argue that given our last 20+ years.

But being thrashed by a 81point margin is quite another.

Yeah, you have to question the Bloods culture. They stood aside when it was all on the line. It was as pathetic a performance as I’ve seen in an AFL GF, and there’s enough imperial data to suggest that teams which have been spanked on the big day drop off in subsequent seasons. Massive question marks for me on Bin Chickens.

I’d say making difficult but correct calls on personnel is an indication of a strong culture rather than the contrary.

That’s essendon kind of brutal, keeping for 10 years with 30 games then delisting :joy:

S Naismith was on track to becoming a terrific asset. I’m not surprised that they persisted with him for as long as they did.

There was an enormous difference in quality of the seasoned cats v the young swans. Sometimes when your opponent is way better you get smashed and you look terrible.

Swans didn’t yet belong in a GF but they did well to get there. They have as much young talent as any team and with luck & good development they will challenge for real in a few years.

Swans will dip a bit this season but be right up there again in 2024 is my prediction. They have the nucleus of a very strong team.

Swans to miss the finals (Can only hope), they will be scarred after that grand final.

There is on average 2-3 changes to the 8 year upon year since we’ve had a final 8 system in place (1994 onwards). More regularly than you’d think, there is often a top 4 team from the previous year that misses finals altogether. Recent examples are Dogs 2017 (after winning the flag), Crows 2018 (haven’t made the final since the 2017 GF), Dees 2019 (went from PF to 17th), Port 2022. They looked spooked in the GF. I don’t know that they’ve got the heart to bounce back.

Collingwood would be another top 4 team with every chance of missing finals. They’ve got a few key players who are older and/or don’t have depth for, who if they’re injured or slow down will be a big headache for them.
