He’s been offending for the past decade and a half though.

I’m not saying it’s the correct way to deal with it… it’s just how the AFL does it. Old sweepy broomy.

The Pride in Sport training is directed at LGBTQ+ diversity, inclusiveness and tolerance.
Are we missing something he’s transgressed in that regard?

its to do with what he called the saints player.

Hirdy copped $50k did he not? With inflation this fine is pathetic.

The fine is a whopping 0.4% of his total contract value while at North. That’ll sting…

Nah, I recall it was also $20k but he was being paid a lot less than this angry little man.

I can understand the AFL choosing, unlike with Hird, not to include a public service element to his “punishment”, because he’d probably abuse more people while doing that.

It’s still hilarious that Hird was punished for clarifying that only one of the three umps was incompetent.

I think 90% or more of efc fans believe hird was saying the truth.

it felt like that umpire (mclaren) had a bias against us, whether he knew or not. maybe it was subconcious for him.

re the 20k
Hird suggested it likely to avoid match penaltys.
also efc were also fined 5k

I was at the game vs St Kilda which triggered those comments from Hird.

The mood was very tense amongst us fans. It felt like we were getting shafted.

I didn’t watch the Footy Show back then, but when I saw the papers on Friday morning I felt no surprise at all.

If they weren’t biased against us before Hirdy’s comment, they certainly were afterward. The next week was the famous victory against West Coast, where Hirdy dragged us over the line in one of the great individual performances, and got 0 Brownlow votes.

There are a lot of tinfoil hat opinions when it comes to umpires, but Hird not getting a vote for that game should have been an absolute embarrassment to any umpire with even a skerrick of professional pride. It’s just a pity nobody knew until months later when all the heat had gone out of it.

Do they need to claim it?
Unfortunately I would be more shocked if they didn’t face widespread racism back then.
