Big call Captain. Tony Liberatore was one of the hardest players going around and was relentless at getting the ball. Took him years to get the opportunity because he was 5’4” but played over 280 games and a Brownlow Winner, and voted well in many years.
Reckon if he had been 6’ like Tom, he would be viewed as a superstar.
Tony Liberatore was like Sean Denham and Tony Shaw a good battler onballer, all struggled to kick over 35m. But would love to win a hard ball or tag opposition players.
Greg Williams - he was a superstar.
As Carlton had passed on Williams, other VFL clubs were able to recruit him, and prior to the 1984 VFL season he was recruited to Geelong, then under coach Tom Hafey. Williams made his debut in Round 1 and amassed 38 disposals, and scored three Brownlow votes.
When he was first re-assigned as a close tagger, one of his first victims was Gary O’Donnell.
Everything he did was illegal…pinching, scratching, holding, hit after disposal…yet was never once penalised. Should have been umpired out of the game in 1997.
