More like the iceberg, I’d say.
If he’s having an exceptional year then those that oppose the idea will have been proven wrong and he will have earned his place. They nay-sayers don’t see that happening.
It isn’t and nobody has said this. If, say, Archie Roberts’ form is utterly terrible, then yes, he should be dropped. Of course, the sensible thing to do is to back the kids and cut them some slack when their inevitable stuff ups occur.
Not really. Nothing wrong with having him as depth for the remainder of his contract. If his form merits it, play him. The issue is about who is more worthy of the back/mid minutes. Not about form as much as it’s about who should be given the opportunity.
Fans wont cut any slack will just complian how we draft footballers who have poor skills
If we win a final this season with Shiel playing off HBF I’ll happily eat crow. However our priority should be developing the HBFs we have, rather than finding Shiel a new role.
He may even excel from HBF, he has the burst to effectively break lines even if his kicking is often suspect. I thought his game vs Collingwood last season, where he played a more defensive role in the middle, was one of his best in red and black. But adapting him to a new role is not where we should be putting our efforts right now.
As a side note, but related, I fully believe in the method of making young players earn their place in the team, rather than gifting them games.
Two songs come to mind:

Ellie Goulding
Anything Could Happen
We won’t know until we know.
I’m excited !!!
In our consistent cycle we are due for early losses and enough pick up at the end of the year to fall into a final that we get belted in. The administration and coaches at the club see enough potential to be convinced that no further major changes are required of the list and that we are on our way forward. Followed by inconsistency and significant injuries in early 2026 to give some degree of an out for poor results early before the players come back under done and the wheels fall off proper and we sack the coach.
Or we win the flag with a goal after the siren by Nik Cox in his first and only game of the year after getting back from concussion. The game ends up being known as cox’s big ■■■ back
My expectations are, we’ll be ■■■■, like usual.
Aaahh yes, I see that you know your Essendon well.
I have no real expectations…I’ll just sit back and occasionally check game scores (usually after the game has finished to avoid stress).
Thank you for confirming what I just said
I just remembered RFK has been at the club since 2011…
Good preview of our season (not by me).
That article is a very good summation of where the bombers are at.
Well written.
Essendon portion starts at 14.30.
Just when you thought you couldn’t dislike Sam McClure anymore.
Mitch Clearly at least gave a somewhat informed, balanced preview…
It’s so easy with the Smiths: Nowhere Fast, Panic, Oscillate Wildly, Still Ill;

He tips us bottom 4, that’s fine.
It’s possible we finish 15th on 8 wins.
He just spouts nonsense though and clearly has no idea about our young players.
Why write off a 20yo Tsatas leading into his 3rd year in the system ?
He says we have no depth in midfield which is utterly incorrect…
Merrett
Caldwell
Durham
Parish
Tsatas
Hobbs
Martin
Setterfield
Perkins
Sure, we lack another bona fide A+ grader, or ideally a better BBM than Setterfield, Hobbs or Perkins.
To say no depth in midfield.
The guy is clueless!
I’m fine with him tipping us bottom four too but to say our list is a mess and has no talent and depth is just plain wrong
Talks about us not having no depth in the midifeld their midefield falls away drastically after Cripps
Cripps,Curnow,Mckay,Weitering any of those guys get injured and they are farked
Yep, old mate Mateo Szlapek-Sewillo has done a decent job with that appraisal.
