Clubs can only do so much to enforce standards. Allowing yourself to balloon out every preseason then coming in fat and unfit is entirely on the player in my view. That would prevent you from being able to train at full capacity. In short, all a bit hypocritical coming from the lazy sod that is jake… who lo and behold, is injured coming into the season proper
That was from me, i was at the airport flying back from Sydney and sheils dad started chatting to me in the waiting lounge. I asked him how Dylan likes being at Essendon, he said ‘well he told me they don’t train very hard at all’. That was after we got flogged in round 1 in 2019. I shared it on here and got the usual accusations of making it up, but people believed it in the end when i described the video his dad showed me of him presenting the jumper to his son, which was uploaded on the club website days later.
@groundcontrol i think Kelly’s best is still A grade but with age he tends to only play a top level game a few times per year. I’d take Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Sydney, Melbourne (when firing) as midfields that would beat theirs in finals. The giants backline is arguably the best in the comp and their forward 50 is one of the best. Hopefully like you said they can get one of their forwards to become a consistent midfielder and if leake can ascend quickly it will help. They also have no ruck depth outside of Briggs which is a worry, coz he tends to pop his shoulder out every second week.
It really does seem as though they were ahead of the curve with regards to how footy is being played and the direction it’s heading in. By this I mean there is a clear emphasis being placed on ground ball gets and speed on transition (offensive and defensive).
They then went about assembling a fleet of players with a low centre of gravity who are incredibly quick yet also physical and competitive. It’s actually nuts how many they have of this type on their list. Beyond the usuals who play regularly (Daniels, Bedford, Jones) they have a raft of them developing and ready to call on should they lose anyone (Thomas, Hannaford, Angove, Rowston, Gothard, McMullin).
I think it’s almost at the point where they may have even over indexed slightly but philosophically speaking I think they read the play better than most here and have drafted accordingly.
I think that’s why it’s funny. He is the most limited journeyman in the AFL and was dead set the last bloke you wanted shooting for goal yesterday. I nearly fell off my chair when he slotted it.
When Keefe was at The Filth and rubbed-out for drug offences (was it 2014? 2015?), what would the odds have been on him still playing football at the top level in 2025? He really is one the ploddiest plodders to ever have plodded. That’s the length of career that Essington generally hands out to such spectacularly average footballers.
The way the coach and the playing group talk about him, it sounds like he’s a heart and soul guy and understands the boring things like the team structures and playing exactly to a role. I’d say those things have kept him in the AFL system for 5 or so years longer than his ability would indicate he should be.
Also, being 204cm and a good athlete covers a multitude of sins when you’re settling on those last one or two list spots to cover off on depth in varying areas.
