My Prediction

Imagine a world where Sydney was the highest scoring team in the AFL. Who knew Longmire could pivot like that. It didn’t really help them on the last Saturday in September when everything went absolutely wrong and they were destroyed in a way nobody expected. They haven’t lost anyone world changing and you would expect them to be pretty good again.

Their backline may have had the 7th most points kicked against it but it was only 5 goals more than the best backline so they are still very efficient. McCarton, Melican and Rampe (he is still playing) are solid talls if unexciting. Blakey brings the excitement along with Florent to give them run from the backline.

The midfield will be interesting this year. Warner-watch will be massive until he signs on and stays at Sydney. Lloyd, Warner, Gulden, Heeney and Mills are a very very good starting midfield. Then you rotate Rowbottom and Roberts through as well as a couple of the young draftees and you have a midfield that works both ways, highly skilled and run hard. They will be hoping Mills can get a much better run at it this year.

The forward line scored so well last year despite it looking dreadful on paper. Joel Amartey is the Temu version of Buddy, Logan McDonald looks like a player for at least a quarter of most games. Their smalls are where it is at. Papley, Heeney (when he isn’t in the middle), Hayward and Jordon/Adams give them great defensive pressure and drive the scoring.

Brodie Grundy was back to playing great footy last year and there is no reason to think he wont improve this year after a full year in their system. He isn’t the worlds greatest tap ruckman but his work around the ground makes up for it. The coach is different, we don’t know what to expect but we do know that coming in to a team that finished on top of the ladder doesn’t give you a lot of time to settle in. I don’t expect much to change, he has been in the system for a long time and Longmire is still there is the background supporting him.

Sydney lost Luke Parker and gained a couple of good kids and a fully fit Callum Mills so there is no reason to think they wont be a top team again this year. They have a great list an no obvious gaps. I think they finish top 2 again.

Can’t stand them.
As much as I dislike the Lions, it was glorious watching the Swans soil their pants again in yet another GF.

The temerity of that ugly c@$# Blakey displaying faux toughness against a fair ball player in Wright Rd.2, along with the lack of humility of Papley post game.

Blow me Sydney

It’s hard to know how much baggage there is from their last 2 GF appearances and having the doors blown off them on the biggest stage. Change of coach might help, if Longmire was still at the helm then maybe there would be more of a hangover there. If Cox can come in, stay true to their ethos but add his own stamp on things, maybe a tweak here and there, it might make a difference. Still expect a strong season, 5th at worst.

If their season doesn’t start well then expect a few players to leave. The talk is already strong that some are going to anyway.

Hoping Rowell goes to Swans not Cats.

Hope he stays at the Suns.

My sporting highlight of 2024 apart from the poms losing another euro final was seeing this lovechild wank club get rinsed in another grand final. Long may it continue

my highlight was probably Jess Hull’s 1500m silver medal and 2000m world record, probably followed by Ariarne Titmus 800m swimming Gold.

Seeing Sydney lose in that manner was special. Bit of a let down on the day though especially after all Brisbane’s other games were thrillers.

Can the Swannies recover from yet another soul destroying GF loss. They looked unbeatable at times during the season, so their total demise on the big day not only caught them and us off guard, but also defied their shown form. They have winners with class all over the field, have lost no one of note and will be top contenders again. They will look at 2024 as the one that got away, Brissy stand in their way again.

Still can’t figure out wtf happened to them on grand final day. Of all possible results, them getting thrashed i had at about a million to one.

SYDNEY SWANS

B: D. Rampe, L. Melican, H. Cunningham
HB: M. Roberts, N. Blakey, O. Florent
C: E. Gulden, Ch. Warner, J. Jordon
HF: T. Papley, L. McDonald, A. Sheldrick
F: T. McCartin, J. Amartey, W. Hayward
FOLL: B. Grundy, I. Heeney, C. Mills
I/C: J. Rowbottom, J. Lloyd, J. McInerney, R. Fox, B. Campbell

EMG: B. Paton, T. Adams, H. McLean

Backline looks a bit suspect I would probably put Tom McCartin back down there.
Midfield is strong
Forwardline can be hit and miss.
Their weapons are their accurate kicking though with Gulden and Blakey.

Sydney completely lost their mojo after about Rd 15. Should not have won that qualifying final, and Port were an easy kill in the prelim.

I have them as anywhere between 3-8. Don’t think they’ll be standout top two good this year, but can’t see them losing enough to miss finals.
