Catch 22 Loop.
We are lucky we rarely play Geelong more than once a season.
Over the last 15 years we have won 2 of 17 games. So clearly the reason for the above is that we are consistently in a 2 nd class part of the competition.
Here is the strange situation. The side which lost to Freo, and only just lost, had about half its players over 30. Players rarely last beyond 30 at the Bombers. My view is that our best players are either enticed elsewhere, or never get to the level required to be able to continue at AFL level. That is down to drafting and development..
Here is the Catch 22: Geelong have retained a core of older players in the 30+ bracket who provide a high level training environment enabling the younger players to see the level they need to get to to compete.
On the other hand we have few 30+ players, like zero. Our list continuously has a deficit of class. At some point we need to get some of these senior players into the club to lift the development ceiling we have been experiencing .
So, if we are to get into the Geelong Collingwood class we need to change our focus and start getting a core of top players hitting 30 .
The alternative is be like stKilda and continue to be Geelongs bunnies for decades

But, given I attribute the 2011 flag mainly to Wells for his brilliant recruitment and Bomber for getting the club 2 flags and on the long term trajectory of success,
Scott since that 1st flag has 1 flag in 15 seasons. Their ability to contend every year is phenomenal and I think we need wider views of what being successful means.

Also the most kissed on the arse club in the AFL. Were at the top when FA came in so have milked it for everything it is worth and more, been allowed to complete dodgy deals, beat up on interstate teams at GMHBA stadium for years and relied on the come to Geelong and Surf Coast recruiting strategy. In some ways it hasn’t been that hard for them to be successful.

More likely our fitness staff and medical teams. Plenty of guys like Walla, Ambrose, Dempsey, Zaka, Hocking, Myers, Hurley, Pears, Fantasia, Belly, Shiel etc failed to make 30 or barely got to 30 or 31.
Now Langford, Parish, Ridley and others are falling away.

I’ve lived in the Geelong area since I was 15 years of age and seeing the transformation of the city, versus how busy and congested Melbourne has become, has also made Geelong an extremely attractive place to come and play versus how it used to be in the 80s and 90s.
Add in those other incentives and it’s a no brainer for many players to come and have a great life.

I agree. The family and I visited Geelong for an Airbnb weekend away earlier this year. It was the first time I’d actually stayed there and we were really impressed. It was nothing like the Geelong you might remember from years gone by.

Yeah there’s heaps of good infrastructure here now including three very large hospitals, good schools of all different varieties and having GMHBA Stadium is a luxury that a small city usually doesn’t get. Vicinity to the coast and it is terrific.
I work weekends and my kids are 7 and 11. So we bought a caravan and because there are so many coastal towns, I drop the caravan down to wherever my wife and kids want to set up during summer and they just have a ball. we go to different coastal towns every couple of weeks.

I’m sick of Melbourne people realising the lifestyle is better here and they move their lives down and drive up the cost of living for all of us.

I’ve been trying to stop @Nexta and @dmaplestone encouraging more dirty southerners (like me) to migrate north to the sunshine state just because their tired old bones are struggling in the bleak southern lowlands.

Good point. Do we “over train” our senior players? Remember Fletch had a “leave pass” that enabled him to just run, but not do all the skills stuff. Retired in his late 30s. Is that what Geelong do?
I think this is severely under rated by many people. It makes a massive difference to your performance and drafting/trading.
For every 2 guys Geelong have playing into their mid 30s with 15 year careers, we have to draft 3 guys who barely get to 30 and have 10 year careers to get the same net output.

Completely agree. Just adding on average two years to an AFL career makes a huge difference to how many good players you have to recruit.
