They genuinely are a clueless lot. At best their offer for Merrett combined was worth about pick 6. GC gave up a lot more for Trac and would have outbid Hawthorn in any race. Oliver is the player going cheap they should have been targeting.

They thought Merret blowing up the club was going to get him well they thought wrong and underestimated Essendon.

This is about making a stance to other clubs that you can’t come in and take out best player who’s under contract for peanuts.

I think they had us pegged pretty well enough for the last decade or so but Walsh has definitely come in with a more aggressive mindset and ultimately I believe that is more important than some extra draft picks. No amount of picks can change a clubs culture but maybe just maybe this strong stand will in hindsight prove a turning point.

Like when we held onto Daniher? For what it’s worth we should of let Merrett go and we definitely should next year.

For what its worth I don’t care what people who wanted to be bent over think. The club needed a change and I think letting our captain leave with 2 years of a contract to go and only getting the equivalent of pick 6 would be a dumb move. IF we’d been offered something similar to what Melbourne got for Trac then I probably would have seen it differently but the facts are the offer was unders and only a weak club would have accepted it. If some want us to remain a weak club that’s their choice not mine.
FWIW, we were never actually offered the great deal for JD so there is no comparison. The reports were they were trying to get pick 9 to offer for him plus their 2020 1st but Carlton were after Papley so there were other reasons the trade didn’t get done. The 2020 draft would still be compromised if we’d traded JD earlier so a difference in our picks for that draft is extremely unlikely to have seen a better outcome. If we swapped McDonald for Reid we’d arguably be worse off.

Still my opinion that it’s an advantage to have played round zero and then meet someone in round 1 who didn’t. Stupid system.

Especially with the one touch, no fumbling ground balls that they will have over us in the first half.
They will be a lot cleaner and efficient than us early, it will be a repeat of R1 last year.

i think its an advantage for touch but playing in 80% humidity and 6 day break might have a few of them feeling the pinch. but they are professional athletes and its early in season i cant see it having too much effect on them.
We never actually got the deal offered for JD because they didn’t trade Papley. We didn’t actually stand strong, they simply were nowhere near as keen on JD as Hawthorn were on Merrett. Thats the difference. JD sought out Sydney who didn’t think he was worth offering their 1st pick in 2019 for.
Also 1 was our captain & best player, the other had spent 2 years injured. Again BIG difference.

Didn’t help us last year. We came out flat, they were on and they dismantled us in the first 40 minutes.
Not really, Daniher was our marquee player. We literally were selling the club to prospective recruits on the back of Daniher being a generational forward. We were building the side around him. Rightly or wrongly we took a stand then just like we took a stand with Merrett. I really don’t see any difference. But we can just disagree and leave it there.

They played round zero, we didn’t. I suspect that as the years tick by, the stats will suggest an advantage to those with a game under their belt.
What should really happen is that those who played week 1 should only play other teams who played week 1 in week 2.
Or ideally scrap the entire idiocy altogether.

He played 11 games for 15 goals in 2018 & 2019 & was not the captain. Once again, even though you are willingly ignoring the facts, we didn’t actually make a stand with JD, Sydney effectively pulled out when the price for them was going to be Papley to Carlton. IF, Sydney had offered their 1st picks in 2019 & 2020 then I believe we very likely would have agreed & it would have been the right move but trading up from Reid to McDonald in 2020 wouldn’t have been a gain. We didn’t actually lose out not trading JD because we don’t know the price.

Daniher would never of been our captain, it wasn’t in his make up. But he would have been our best player and match winner.
My memory was if we agreed to trade Daniher, Sydney would have traded Papely for Carlton first pick which they would have given to us with their own late first rounder. Our stance was you need to get that pick before we talk. That was without a guarantee we would trade. We just weren’t that interested in entertaining a trade. Which at the time I thought was fair enough.
As for who we would have picked with that draft pick, that’s irrelevant. My point is there is no difference in how Welsh handled it
