So you are claiming that Tanner came out & publicly stated that as President he was determined that under no circumstances would we trade Daniher? IF you can find me a copy of that statement I might consider that Welsh handled it the same.
Ok, give you that Walsh came in and publicly made a statement. I do remember a lot of public statements from the club with a more softer stance trying to keep Daniher.

So……..can you maybe just maybe see that you were wrong & Welsh handled it very differently in that he made it a very public position from him personally as the President of the club that we were making a stand & wouldn’t be trading Merrett?
Every club plays it tight when stars want to be traded but what Welsh did was absolutely different in that he made a cultural decision as President & stood by it. Thats very different to how we tried to push for a better deal on JD or for example how farkCarlton handled Curnow.
I see it similar to Hawthorns line in the sand in 2004. No they didn’t win that game & in fact they didn’t even win for another 8 weeks but it was part of a cultural shift in the clubs mindset. It was symbolic gesture that of course didn’t actually lead to premierships directly but played a small part in that journey. We needed something to be our catalyst & I can’t think of anything better than it becoming our folklore moment.

The difference is marginal, everybody has their own particular ways they like to get to the outcome they desire, even if that outcome is the same. Can we stop arguing about this now.
Of course it is. You only have to look at all of the Victorian teams that are playing Opening Round to see. Every single one of the AFL’s favourites.
If they are desperate to keep Opening Round, then either play games in every state, or do as the NRL does and split it over two weekends (admittedly that’s because they are in Vegas).
