Should I buy a pool?

I’ll end this by saying, never again! But I love it.

We recently bought a house which has a pool (haven’t moved in yet).

To be honest, we’d have preferred not to have a pool (given running costs, space it takes up in the backyard, even safety with little kids) but otherwise loved the place and so went ahead. We are entertaining whether we fill it in but I suspect that will cost as much as putting in a pool so will likely leave it. Our kids are 3 and 1 so it will be great for them to grow up with and it definitely makes me look forward to summers in the place.

The thing I didn’t realize about having a pool is that it provides tranquillity to the backyard. My kids are a bit older now so the yard was never used as it was too small for them to do anything. I feel the pool has made the backyard usable again.

I know that it is a luxury, but I haven’t bought a car for 15 years, so I feel I can justify it. I also feel that it adds to the overall house value, even though I’m not looking at moving anytime soon. I will say that it has been hard work and cost a lot more than I first thought. I ended up doing all the fences, the path, the shed and pergola myself, so it has probably saved me a bit.

Looks fantastic. As both you and the kids get older you will find that those summer BBQ’s / parties / drinks revolve around the pool. As a teenager in Melbourne, we always ended up at a mates place because he had an above ground pool. It copped a hammering from us over the years. People that have never had a pool always um and ah about them. Those that install them raarely ever regret getting them.

We were in the same boat three years ago when moving house.

My girls are 4 and 6 now. They spend every possible day in the pool and their swimming is fantastic. If you like entertaining it’s great to have as well.

That look amazing, well done! We are also getting a pool, dig starts in a week, pool goes in a week later. I’m hoping it goes smoothly, whenever we dealing with trades I am always a little nervous so hopefully all goes well.

Mate, my pool started in October when it just kept raining. I had delay after delay and costs kept mounting. I hope you have a better experience than what I have had!

I am happy to provide advice to anyone looking to install a pool or are in the middle of installing a pool. Trust me, I have been through it all.

Thanks Clone. How big is your pool? Looks a decent size considering you’ve got the spa as well!

9.5m pool. I’m fortunate to have a 20m wide block of land.

thats amazing. Enjoy mate, the hot weather is holding out for you which is good.

The reason we got the spa was because it can be enjoyed year round. I get that our weather isn’t ideal for pools, but it’s nice to even sit out there and read. I have a full sun back yard which makes it more usable as well.

Mate that’s the best transformation, thanks for sharing the pics. I had to scroll back to make sure you didn’t have a shed there when you started.
I’ll definitely hit you up for some advice when we move into our new build and we have to get the pool shell to life. We have a landscaping plan already but still need to decide on paving/coping and fencing, and as you say it isn’t cheap. We have to landscape the rest of the block too or at least hard scape it.
As soon as we have a driveway the pool will be the main priority.
