Just a note here that given the relatively high bar to criminal convictions there are relatively few such s-xual assault matters that transition from complaint to conviction.

Most such complaints don’t even lead to prosecution.

Also, very few complainants are outright fabricated. It can happen but it sits at 2-10% according to the statistics that can be best verified.

I would be looking at what is happening with any civil cases. This could be on the part of the complainants or defamation cases on the part of some or all of the players (such cases can backfire spectacularly). The reason here is the evidentiary bar goes from beyond all reasonable doubt to balance of probabilities.

TLDR I would caution against any VicPol decision being the end of the matter.

Agree with this. I would point out that with civil cases that although the burden of proof changes, so do the incentives. Someone can believe they’re in the right but still settle as financially the press around a case and legal expenses makes settling the more expedient option.

On the discussions in this thread, it’s been pretty clear that plenty of posters have taken overblown positions on multiple sides around a set of incidents 99.9% of us have little real knowledge of. The public still doesn’t even know what the alleged criminal action was or its severity.

What an absolute mess

If the murmurs are true, it’s a kick in the teeth to all people who’ve been sexually assaulted and does nothing for the false perception that women frequently make this stuff up

Also sums up a wider problem in society re the responses and mob mentality, people love feeling superior by jumping on their moral high horse yet are incapable of thinking critically

That’s all it is at the moment when it comes to what allegedly happened.

In true modern style though, so many willing to crucify those accused before the facts are publicly presented.

Stiff if you’ve spent 4 minutes in a room

People form opinions and express them based on the information they are given. I don’t think it’s out of any malice - although when sporting teams are involved it does bias things. Are you suggesting you’re not too capable of thinking this way? You’re better than this wider population?

Yes I do, unfortunately now people tend to form an opinion and run with it without waiting for the full picture. The opinions people based on this story were outrageous in particular, should have been a red flag seeing how quickly the media lapped this up. This whole saga reminds me of The Simpsons sexual assault episode

I don’t think the majority of people enjoy reacting to stories like this or want to feel upset or let down or concerned.

I don’t remember the part where Homer and his friends hired three strippers…

Insert Isaac Heeney

I’m aware of that scene. I don’t recall anyone saying that in real life, either.

So that’s two things about that episode that aren’t really comparable. Do you have anything specific?

You’d probably recall the hysteria particularly during that week when the story broke. Think it’s extremely comparable, given it comments on media hysteria and people’s willingness to jump on board some moral outrage. I have a few examples in my real life, happy to share

I’m trying to avoid hyperbole, and I don’t think comparing this very real life situation to a Simpsons episode is helpful for anyone.

Heeney hasn’t been verballed. There is no talk show where people made themselves martyrs upon hearing of the incident. Driving a babysitter home is not the same thing as hiring three strippers, while you’re shitfaced, with your mates.

Well that’s where we disagree, because I think it’s a good comparison in blindly giving into media hysteria when the facts aren’t known. And you’re taking the comparison of a talk show waaaay too literally, it’s the concept of hysteria

Henney’s name has been dragged through the mud, unless you’ve been living under a rock the last few weeks

You and others keep making these vague accusations of this happening. Of pre-judgement.

I haven’t seen examples of that, and you’re not giving any, you’re quoting The Simpsons.

Heeney’s ‘name’ has been diminished by the known facts so far. As I’m sure his ex-partner would agree.

But in any case, blitz is telling me I’m talking too much to you, so I’ll leave it there.

What rot.
