Then I don’t see the point of your thread tbh Ben? It’s not really helping the rest of us understand much at all.

@benfti if you draft an indigenous player because they are indigenous and not because they are the best available at that draft pick is that not by definition racist?

I feel you and some others may be being presumptuous.

To make it more worthwhile, make it just a comparison with Melbourne based clubs.

I’ve said it before, the lack of a large Indigenous community in Melbourne, compared to other cities, makes it harder for clubs & players here.

Three on our list not two.

Being conservative is very, very, very, very, very different from “we should have drafted that indigenous guy instead of that white guy”.

I’d also argue it is probably better than the Relton Roberts situation, where a guy is drafted with absolutely zero idea of what’s expected of him. Cue dim sims in the car park.

What does that have to do with your question?

I really couldn’t give a stuff if our club was represented by 22 Latvian midgets as long as they were the best players available at the time, although the ruck might be an issue. Not much of a fan of choosing a player purely based on colour though, if someone came on here suggesting we should have chosen the white guy, all hell would break loose.

The issue might be that the attributes to succeed at AFL have changed a bit over the past few years, and our recruiting staff are not sure that many of the young indigenous players available meet these additional criteria. If so, the question is why are we not backing our development programs to enable these talented indigenous players to realise their AFL potential?
Where I agree with ben is that we can’t boast about our indigenous programs unless we are turning the talent into best 22 players as well as our competitors are. Better to leave the boasting until we are leaders again.

DM please

to be fair, Richmond actually has learnt a lot from that.

and ■■■■ me I hate people citing Relton Roberts as a disaster given it was Richmonds poor management at the time

Me too.

Me too

Seems most would. Why does it have to be a DM??

Truth is truth, if it is such, just put it out there, … here.

is not picking the indigenous kid because he requires more off field support than the next kid on the list who isnt indigenous also racist?

note

Note I have a lot of experience working with indigenous kids and some experience with indigenous footballers.

Because it will cause a shitstorm, and I want to check with the site owner that its ok if I do that before I do that.

I am also wanting to check with a couple of sources whether a) its ok if i share this information publicly, and b) if i am allowed to name them

What? Melbourne has a large indigenous community, what rock do you live under? But sure, even though I would have assumed that people are capable of telling which clubs are in vic and which ones arnt
