Something Rotten in Denmark

The AFL can’t hide the stink for much longer. They’re committed to an 18 team competition for the next broadcast deal at least and presumably longer but if something isn’t done to stop the hemorrhaging soon the sport’s appeal to younger participants and supporters will receive significant damage that will be difficult and expensive to repair. For the record I support a second AFL side in Qld in principal but perhaps it should have been located a bit further north as it appears SEQ isn’t big enough for two sh*tty sides. What to do?

Does that mean it's going into a black hole to another dimension? Above everything else the afl are doing to ■■■■ this game up, it's the nfl model rip off that grates the most. We're being dumbed down and just going along with everything they do. I nearly wept when I took sameolds Jr. to Auskick and the first thing the facilitator did was get them to "take a knee". Listening to dwayne russell is not something I do on purpose but if I have the misfortune of hearing him I'm pretty sure 100 angels perish somewhere. I won't be dictated by the afl any longer. Up the glory.

What on Earth is “take a knee”?

It’s what happens to you if you get too close to Sam Mitchell.

Where are they supposed to “take it”, in the nuts?

What is wrong with the league? Just stop the game clock while the player is lining up for a shot and then none of the rest matters.

Dear Riolio,

Thank you for your feedback. We here at the AFL are constantly striving to make the AFL experience a more enjoyable one for our loyal fans.

One of the ways we do this is to constantly make rule changes to speed up the game. We then make more changes to try and correct the problems the first rule change caused. We know we’re screwing up this great game but as long as we say we’re not its ok. Its all about the optics, you see.

We can do this because we are untouchable here at the AFL, and we know most of our loyal fans will continue to turn up and spend their hard - earned no matter what we do.

This system works best when loyal fans such as yourself don’t ask questions and simply we do what we say, no matter how idiotic it may seem.

Your AFL experience will therefore be much more enjoyable if you don’t try to make sense of our decisions. Instead, we advise you to blindly follow the pre-determined narratives we direct our media communication specialists to write while we sit back and rake in the money from the sweetheart deals we make with our business mates.

games last 6 days, unlimited rotations.
The six-day breaks will really suck, though.

Gridiron players do it while the coaches speak, they kneel on one knee while the other leg props out making them look like they’re sort of stretching a calf. I can’t explain it but you’d expect Dawson to be doing it in Friday night lights.
Auskick is a frigging thankless task but I’m thankful that others do it do I don’t have to. Mainly because I’m god awful, and if my own kids don’t listen to me why would 40 others.
And in a hilarious aside, his Auskick bag arrived today with another joe Daniher card in the free packet, the same Essendon player we got in the corresponding bag last year.
Cool story sameold2010 jrs dad.

This is golden!

2 'conferences' 10 teams each Play twice 18 rounds Top 5 finals series 2 grand finals The 2 winners play off for 'champions of the colony'

Whatever,

anything would be better than just ‘add more teams to get more money’

without changing the structure of the comp significantly to keep up with the added teams it’s just ridiculous.

I’d like to see this too, but the problem with two conferences is that one is inevitably going to be seen as Division 1.
Splitting up the Melbourne teams, keeping blockbusters and not diminishing the ‘other’ conference is challenge.
One conference has two WA teams and two Qld teams, the other has two SA teams and two NSW teams. Fine. Although you’ve stuffed the QLD/NSW rivalry already.
Now split up the Vic teams.

Whilst this is all just ■■■■■■■ in the wind…

With my idea of conferences or divisions would alternate each year or couple of years.

At the end of the year (or do average it over a couple of years) teams 1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17 in one group all the others in the other group. Then you end up with 2 similar divisions.

What’s stupid is these are probably the real issues that would impact the AFL long term and reinvigorate the Como. But they want to ask the fans about the shot clock and the price of food at etihad

I'd fear for a few teams under that set-up, and can Ballarat afford trips to WA? But by gosh it would stop tanking. Not sure how you do a draft, either.
Smaller clubs playing out of smaller stadiums = less overheads. More localised supporter bases = better attendance. 15k would be a "blockbuster" attendance for 2nd Div. Draft goes as normal. Promoted teams are 1 & 2 in the order. Once the draft is done, players not drafted can opt to stay in for the 2nd Div draft, which pretty much replaces the PSD (similar rules, but players can more or less make direct deals with their preferred clubs beforehand, or nominate criteria such as "I'll only play for a WA club")
It's not a terrible idea, but there needs to be ~ 10x the money in the game for that. And if they finally bring that sort of money in from foreign countries I'd rather see one of the ■■■■■■ Melbourne clubs move to NZ and/or a league-wide reserves competition.
Broadcast money. Separate 1st Div and 2nd Div FTA rights. 2nd Div "games of the round" take centre stage on Thursday nights (avoiding big trips, so keep them as "derbies" wherever possible - my list of teams above allows for 20 per season, not accounting for relegated AFL teams) and Sunday 4:40pm to allow those clubs to pull in sponsor money. 1st Div keeps Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday 1:40pm. Saturday arvo games on Foxtel/livestream only.

They don’t teach you that at Auskick coaching. They don’t teach you anything.

It’s one of the toughest jobs I’ve ever done. Turn up, get a red polo and a whistle and here’s 120 prep kids for you to train. Voila you’re now a coach!

Oh, and while your doing it, their parents will offer no assistance whatsoever, until after when they come over to ‘offer a little bit of feedback’ about how their child might get a few more free kicks during the game.

Need to add two more teams, one from Tassie, and one from NT.

That will make a 19 round season, and possibly a top 10?? for another week of finals …

If that was to happen, we would need:

2 Divisions, with final fours.
18 round seasons

games last 6 days, unlimited rotations.

6-hour quarters

Games to have 6 quarters instead of 4. AFL don’t do anything by fractions

“These are not the droids you’re looking for”

So, in an effort to eliminate time wasting when shooting for goal Mark Evans and the afl introduces a rule that legalizes time wasting.
They’re playing with our minds.
Again.
Moronic.

Make it a 15 second rule and then nobody gaf.

Or just stop the clock, then they can take as long as they like.

That would mess with scheduling and so forth. I can just imagine players taking 2 minutes for a shot.

Every team plays each other twice.

They then split into three conferences.

The top 6 teams play off for ladder position and finals draw
The middle 6 complete for the last 2 positions in the finals
The bottom 6 compete for draft position

This has been said several times but the bottom 6 thing doesn’t work. Imagine if we were in the hole we are in and get dicked by the 12th place side for the #1 pick?

EDIT: Missed the fact that you said play each other twice, is that a typo?

Games start at MCG and finish in Perth.

Make it a 15 second rule and then nobody gaf.

Or just stop the clock, then they can take as long as they like.
