I agree. We recruit good players and they go backwards. They have a good first year then they fall off.
It happens over and over again.
That’s a cultural problem. It’s mixed messaging. It’s confusion.
Nothing will change until they have a proper review.
Sheedy and Brasher walking around talking to people and considering it a “review”is a complete joke.
The entire club needs reviewing not just the football department.
I think the club focuses far too much on the “bottom line” the balance sheet, how to recruit new members etc, which is where Esports and basketball come from.
They need to focus on their core business.
Saying it doesn’t make it so.
Oh, I dunno.
He said nothing, and nothing’s happening. That seems to be pretty cut and dried.
You can keep judging someone on their words. I’ll keep watching the actions and the actions of this club continue to be denial and arrogance. We are playing a number of kids, though it’s hard to be sure if that is purposeful or by need given half the list are hurt most of the time… generally we’ve all found selections to be very perplexing (Smith, Ham et al).
What I see that we now know about Brasher is he was the board member responsible for governance during saga, fail, part of the board that reappointed woosh, fail, part of the board that approved a BS tranisiton plan to an unproven and now seemingly failing coach, fail, part of the board that approved our approach to draft/recruitment last year (whatever that mess was meant to be) and some ridgy didge review that sees us generally just continuing on with our same old recruitment and development programs that are continuing to prove to be the worst in the league. But hey we are playing some kids as you say.
This… u have hit the nail on the head
He may not suit our nice club, imagine how many apologies the captain would request
Very true
I totally agree - player development is appalling and a major reason why there is never any real improvement. Come to Essendon and become a mediocre, injury prone hack.
Next coach needs to be Ross Lyon.
If nothing else he will completely gut the list which is what’s required.
Since we have done in preseason… no need to do it in season
Lol. Anyone who thought we had a perfect midfield was completely deluded. There’s the real problem - expectations based on poor judgements.
If we were to get Ross Lyon, you would need to be content with us playing in games where it’s 10 goals to 7 the majority of the time. He is all about defence and nothing about scoring
We always overrate our list. It’s one of our biggest problems and why we have the same list manager despite not winning a final for 18 years.
Lyon’s reputation is too badly damaged for a good conservative values club like Essendon.
Regardless his ruthless, non negotiable defence first approach is exactly what the culture of the playing group needs. We need to over correct. Players need to understand they will not be selected if they don’t work hard defensively
I’m not sure he’s the best option but he would demand standards in an area we have set them for as long as I can remember.
But this is a pointless discussion, we’re not sacking Rutten. We’re more likely to extend him and then transition to Cara.
It’s not happening though
As opposed to scoring 100 and losing more often than not?
I agree it’s not the most enjoyable approach but we need fundamental change at Essendon if we are to have any hope of achieving different results.
Bang on Ben. I’ve felt this is cultural for a while although admit to being fooled it was changing last year. Now it seems last year was the outlier.
It is absolutely culture. It has become ingrained in the players that just making finals is a successful season
When you are a young player and you walk into the club. Who are you going to, to find out what you need to do to be successful.
All of our senior players are losers. That is not a personal attack, that’s a fact. They have spent their careers losing game after game. They haven’t got the slightest idea of what it takes to be a winner. The same guys that have failed on the big stage time after time. The same guys that you see laughing and smiling after a loss. That sort of attitude infests a club
The only guy on our list who has tasted the ultimate success is stringer, and even he can’t maintain his body and fitness properly. What hope do the players have
How many times have we heard after a new recruit from another club has joined us, that a player remarks that they have raised the standard at training. It happened with guys like Goddard,Chapman and Shiel. That is a major red flag. Why do you need a new player to come in to lift the standards!?
What I wouldn’t give for a experienced player with a strong personality ( who has tasted success)to come in, be made captain and really shake up the joint and playing group
What’s clear is that we need to import a successful culture from another club.
Joel Selwood would be an amazing get in the right capacity (not that I think he would ever even think of coming here).
Then i will not see Bombers win a final in this life
Many of us won’t.
