Iirc his fingers were all over the Shiel deal too. And of course he was right into the good stuff in 2012.

The Reality is he got the job when we really didn’t have anyone to choose from in 2013. It should have been a temporary appointment though, just long enough for the stink to wear off so we could attract some serious talent.

Instead we’ve held on to him and to my eye he’s made moves to strengthen his position by influencing the composition of the board.

He does deserve some credit for improving the financial position of the club. We were in serious financial trouble as a consequence of the saga and he’s managed to navigate that and seemingly attracts another corporate sponsor everyday before his coffee.

That only carries so much weight me though and I feel he’s cooked pretty much every on field decision he’s had to make.

He’s very much cut from the football boys club cloth and I have absolutely no time for that. The problems run deeper than X though. Brasher blows a lot of hot air but none comes back his way as the member for the board responsible for managing risk in 2012.

Fwiw I think his appointment as chairman is entirely consistent with a club who is still trying to keep a lot of dirty laundry in house.

Does anyone still have that article? Worth a re read I reckon

I wouldn’t take forum responses, chicken littleing after a bad loss, as gospel when evaluating the performance of a CEO. Especially when said forum wanted to eat Brayden Ham after a god damn win.

People online have no perspective. They want the dons to win a flag NOW, but just completely ignore how hard it is to build something good, and how long it takes. Look at GCS, GWS. Red carpet rolled out. One has made a GF. The other is only just getting competitive. We’ve been kicking the can down the road since 04. It’s a timely rebuild.

Just short sighted wilful ignorance.

cos i want to double down on this point.

if we appointed a half competent CEO who got us winning finals, the coteries would’ve bullied the bowls club themselves into letting us redevelop windy hill instead of relocating to ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  tullamarine

You’d be laughing and smiling too with their pay packet if you were getting away with doing half the job.

Plenty of women on this forum would do it.

You want to know what sums up our club. The below.

2 ā€œleadersā€ who were supposed to set the right example for the younger players. It’s been years since this photo, yet the same thing constantly happens after a loss week after week. Then they get their sad face on for the interviews

Anyone who believes Heppell when he says they are hurting is kidding themselves.

Nobody who is truly hurting is laughing after the game.

sounds like middle management

#leadership qualities vs young former cricketer with chip on shoulder.

Maybe that’s because we never bothered advertising the role and seeking serious contenders both nationally and internationally.
We just picked the bloke from the marketing department. He was just over there and it was convenient.

Personally I wish we stayed down a little longer.
How many top 5 picks have we had since Matthew Knights started coaching?
That would be a grand total of 3.
They are Michael Hurley, Darcy Parish and Andrew McGrath.

We really have been the kings of mediocre. For too long. We should just stay ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  for a sustained period and get some top end talent into the club.

How long 5,10 years?

Caroline Wilson stated on Footy Class that Essendon internally expected to slip back this year as they had over achieved last year. If that is true is effing disgraceful. Surely if you overachieve it says you can do it if you want it. Based on that, you then set higher objectives NOT go oh well, we did better than expected so it’s ok if we fall in a heap the following year.

It basically gives Rutten and the whole playing group a Get Out of Jail card.

NO….I say no to that.

It’s 4 am but these thoughts are nagging me. I live in Sydney and have continued to pay my AFL membership despite getting to only 3 or 4 live games in Melbourne per year (and even less with covid) because I wanted to financially support the club. Up until 2008 when I moved I hardly missed a game, I went to some awful losses (like the 1990 GF and the 99 prelim) but my support never wavered.

However watching players just walk around the ground like they are playing in some suburban comp makes me ill. They are paid way more than most of us. Many of us feel a hell of a lot more emotion for the club than they obviously do. For the first time in my life I feel like throwing my membership in. At least in 90 and 99 I had no doubt the pain the players were feeling. Now they appear not to give a stuff, or give a hoot about the thousands of people that turn up to watch. Are we being had?

Anyway that’s my two bob’s worth, Now maybe I can get some sleep!
