Something seriously wrong with the club (Part 2, March 2022)

Or push the club even further down. A financial hit is not what any club needs post pandemic.

Well, if the seats around me at Marvel are any guide, it’s certainly coming. From around 50 people spoken to, there’s at least 20 folks there who’ve reached breaking point and won’t be renewing. A membership and seat is, what, $520-ish? Whether they do or don’t remains to be seen but, if you take them at their word, that’s a shortfall of 10 grand for starters. If that’s a microcosm of Essendon members at large, look out…

@Saladin said it best… corporation, corporation made in the image of Campbell. This dysfunctional ā€œfootball clubā€ is on him. His power and influence at Essendon is absolute. If anyone challenges his authority they’re out.

Undeniably, Campbell’s multiple attempts at making this club football relevant have failed miserably. The board are complicit in this ā€œcrimeā€.

With each of Campbell’s failed attempts, another crippling layer of mediocrity infiltrates the place.

If Essendon are serious about addressing the cultural malaise, Campbell must go. The boards reluctance to pull the trigger says more about personal interests and their capacity to make meaningful change, which has amounted to little in the past 20 years.

One thing will bring in members and sponsorship and thats a ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  premiership.

Exactly. I find myself in a similar predicament. There comes a time when you need to call into question the return on investment, both in terms of time sacrificed and money spent.

Media are ramping up. Brasher and X need to show their faces.

Honestly, I’m starting to come around to this point of view. As much as I hate the AFL and everything they stand for, I’m starting to hate the Essendon hierarchy the same amount

It’s worth a shot

For a start you need two strong and willing candidates who can galvanise the masses. Then you need to conduct a massive campaign direct to all those who can vote. First you need to get them to vote and then you need to win their vote.

From memory though, I think both @Catherine_Lio and @Paul_Cousins did not as candidates get access to the membership list, unlike any other elections. So it is a challenge…

And then once you have your first two, you need to build up to the next two and the third two, so you have six and a majority. Sounds simple.

Once you get on the Board as I am sure Paul and Katie will attest, it becomes difficult, as you are now part of a Team and most of the actions seem reasonable and sane, so it is easy to go along with the rest. So you need to have your Team with a determined plan and defined goals, or strong and definite milestones.

I’m not interested in the club losing money and using that to hold members to ransom. People have been pouring their hard earned into the club for years with nothing in return, just constant money wasting.

The AFL will never let Essendon die so not sure there’s much to worry about if we lose a few $$ in members and sponsors protests.

Was garruntee a mispelling of gumtree?

I will vote for Bacchus and Nino if they run on a joint ticket built on trust, integrity and willingness to bribe/buy our next premiership.

We know the club has copped it in the press and the general footy public for more off the field issues in the last decade, but I can’t remember so much negative analysis (at least not since the Knights days) of the team’s onfield fortunes.

Players, coaches, reputations, hunger all being questioned.

It was fairly intense after the Dockers game but whole new level now.

At most clubs you’d expect a vicious onfield response but with this one? Who knows.

When you a looking for a vicious response, you don’t look at a captain like Hep to set the example.

We are screwed

Throw the kitchen sink ($) at Toby Greene at the end of the season.

One thing for sure is I was the Club Owner, that winning is the only thing I would be concerned about.

Exactly. You ned to have a capable experienced team ready to go before you can challenge. A team with the time and energy to put in to what is for many a thankless task. A team with diverse experience and interests who have some idea what they are getting into. And part of the team, dare I say it, would be a marketing person because you have to be able to sell the vision of the in coming board to voting members to get the votes. It rarely happens becasue it wouldnt be easy.

So talk about a moral dilemma
Pre season myself & 6 mates booked our annual Melbourne trip where we catch both a Swans game (Friday night vs Blue Scum) and Dreamtime game the next night
We were all really pumped for it as it’s been 3 long years since we’d made the trip
The 3 x mates who are Swans supporters are still very keen as they’d should be, but right now I really could not be more unenthusiastic about the prospect of us getting smashed by Richmond

What makes it worse is that I foolishly took up my interstate members option of a discounted ticket to the Swans game at SCG the week before. At least that’s only a 2 hour trip up the highway to suffer those fkwit Shitney supporters and history has told me that even if we’re in with a chance then the AFL mandate will be invoked based on TV Rights & the need to keep interstate teams relevant. Standard umpiring will apply

Maybe we’ll Essington one or both games and show the opposite of what we’ve put on so far this year but I very much doubt it

I feel a bit foolish as the combined investment to get to these games isn’t insignificant and airfares aren’t easily refundable

Sorry about my selfish rant
