Remember back when you were a kid watching the Bombers get flogged. Maybe you are too young and were spoilt by the Sheedy era, I was actually more despondent in the 1970s, but at least I could take my esky into Windy Hill and drink the game away.
We finished higher over the 70’s than the did the 2010’s. Sure it was a smaller comp but we still had 3 top 5 finishes. My memory of footy pretty much started with the Sheedy era.
But seriously, I hope that the players embrace the humiliation and the indifference that the comp holds for them, and turns that into on field hatred of losing.
I find that part of it unrecognisable to me as a supporter in my late 40s.
If you rewatch the 1985 GF you will see what an Essendon team is supposed to play like.
Roger Merrett hitting (blokes) marking contests, Harvey with his kamikaze attack on the contest, Duckworth making every forward earn every kick, TD being TD. List goes on. That was a tough bunch of players and they played like it.
Same can be said for the 2000 side. Most of that backline was fearsome. MJ, Fletch, Wallis, Solly, Wellman, Hardwick. Midfield was pretty tough too with JJ, Hird and Misiti. Lloyd, Moorcroft, and Barnard in the forward line.
Sometimes I think the current team failing to run defensively is not so much lack of fitness or game plan, but just basic lack of personal pride.
Those of us Gen X (older millennials) grew up watching a tough and ruthless club, who would never back down from a fist fight. We see that as the true Essendon brand.
But some older Generations didn’t like this ‘thuggish’ approach. They were trying to get Sheedy sacked for years.
The tough football that we watched in the 80’s & 90’s was the Sheedy brand, not the Essendon brand.
We’re still trying to figure out what we stand for after 2000. Without an intentional coach driven brand, you fall victim to the brand in which you recruit for…… weak & soft.
I still love knowing blokes will front up for their team mate. Call it enforcer or just call it uncompromising, either way, playing nice and skilful will usually lose to tough and skilful.
They have one FOUR flags since we last won a final. They are the most successful team of the modern era. They’ve appreciated that they need a period of bottoming out before the move up again. Make no mistake, they will taste success again before we do - because they aspire to more than an elimination finals win.
Embrace that we are the laughing stock of the competition, Nino. We are. All other clubs laugh at us and have every right to.
Despite all the floggings, there was always something to keep you sticking fat with EFC. Blethyn in the air, Beaumont taking on all of FC, tinnies in the outer etc. Scott and Co will turn it around.
