The team I follow in the NHL has been similar to Essendon for a similar timeframe. Always mid table, not good enough to go deep in playoffs, not bad enough to get elite talent in the draft. Plus, the fans use the word ‘mediocrity’ far too often.
12 months ago, we got a new GM who decided it was finally time to go full rebuild, and he has absolutely gutted the roster. Basically anyone over 28 was and still is up for trade.
We’re gonna really suck for a few years, but they are going to be more fun to watch than the bombers over that time.
im fairweather new to hockey, so its just playoffs as too much sport already. but florida panthers had a record eerily similar to essendon’s last 20 years if you look through it.
Scott’s not the sole decision maker.
The fact that he’s been made about the only public face of the club ( compared to the role previously held by X as CEO) serves to deflect the blame to him.
We aren’t starting a full scale rebuild 2 full years into Scott’s tenure. We need to wait for him to be sacked and it all to fall apart again. Maybe a year or two away.
Wasn’t the whole thing with Brad Scott about only coming over if he was to have actual power in the football side of the business and that the corporate side and others would not get in his way or create distractions?
Well, Brad has the authority and the autonomy over this team and the football side of things apparently, so yes, he does become the public face of the club and is a serious decision maker within the football department.
He would have the biggest voice when it comes to match committee, he would have the biggest voice when it comes to how we play, he would have the biggest voice in leading this team outside of the Captain.
There are some pretty easy list decisions to make:
Heppel, Goldstein - retire
Laverde, Shiel, Stringer - look for other clubs
Keep one of Reid / Baldwin
Replace those 5 in the best 22 with Tsastas, Hobbs, Bryan, Roberts and a key back. Or a mid we draft this year.
I don’t think we move Parish or McGrath without attaching a pick.
