the playing group has been like that since 2005. The culture could have spilled from them to the Board.
But if you check Bacchus’s posts of EFC Presidents. the rot set it when McKissock got the tap on the shoulder to take over despite the fact that there was no indication he had any value to offer the club. Each successive appointment has had a worse outcome.
Because we don’t play finals, this club thinks that they can attract players from other clubs with “Big Games” such as ANZAC Day and Dreamtime.
How embarrassing.
Only Essendon could blow the gilt edged opportunity that has fallen into its laps to actually do the rebuild right by keeping Merrett and Ridley. You watch, we will chase some rubbish free agent and dilute the Draper compo, and we will sit here in 12 months time thinking about who we could pick up at pick 9 or 10
In 12 months time we’ll be sitting here after enduring 4 years of this version of the past 20+ years of nonsense, and people will still be yapping away that it’s still Brad’s first year, we’re 100% rebuilding, it’s an 8 year plan, no no actually Rosa has a 3 year plan, we’ll have forced Merrett to stay and his value will be in the gutter and the vibes completely off, Ridley will have spent all year injured and probably along with whoever we draft in a few weeks and ruin over the summer, with the worlds most boring useless game plan courtesy of the exact definition of a mediocre coach assisted by a bunch of assistants who are better suited for coaching under 10s.
It’s very resultist of me to post this but I honestly think our problems with the club overall predate Sheedy and largely our successes from Reynolds onward have been driven by coaches who’ve taken the club by the scruff of the neck and dragged every single part of it kicking and screaming across the line.
Looks like most of the areas within the club has been fixed over the past few years. President, S&C, recruitment/list management and coach has been put on notice (hopefully).
The one glaring omission is the player development staff. Richmond have just appointed Bruest and Duryea. One of the best in the business would be Lappin at Geelong. Big question is who do we have or need to get to fully develop the young talent on our list?
potentially but certainly the biggest issue in the last 25-30 years is EFC never really embracing the concept of building a successful list and club in the 21st century.
Ie the foresight and flexibility to embrace acquiring talent through absolutely every means available. Draft primarily, then working out the smart move from FA, trade, NGA etc etc.
There’s a wilful pride to EFC that really hurts. Hurt us with the Saga. Hurts us with every year the club refuses to rebuild. Hurting us right now with ZM. Hurts us every time a coach gets knifed because some old bloke knows better.
It’s gone past “drawing lines in the sand” and any other statement rubbish.
That pride’s built into Sheedy’s DNA and it’s built into Hird and it’s built into Dodoro. Just out here drawing lines in sand for eternity.
If a captain who canvasses a shift to another club is allowed to stay and run out in an Essendon jumper again, thats something we need to work on, I think it sends the worse possible message to the whole team.
