Stringer Thread II - 10,000 posts was Not Enough

Poor form comment. Most football followers would have Bob Murphy playing for their Club in a heartbeat!

hes a flog. the circlejerk around him in 2015/6 was unbearable.

Agree with all that, except the marking bit.

For a medium size forward, he is a pretty strong contested mark.

But yeah, can you imagine if we manage to get him tackling, sheparding, blocking for teammates etc?

His best footy is already amazing, but itā€™s the further development that he clearly has in him that excites me the most.

Fingers crossed we get this guy right, because if we doā€¦ Goodness.

If he gets fit enough to play 50 or 60% midfield and work hard both ways, weā€™ll be in sensational shape for next year.

No way weā€™re getting Stringer. Iā€™ve resigned myself to that.

Heā€™s hugely talented, but could (and probably should) become a far far better player with the right guidance and direction heā€™s not a great mark. He doesnā€™t work hard enough defensively. Not as fit as he should be.

Run that sort of talent level through the white bread vanilla good clubman factory that weā€™ve assembled in the coachā€™s box?
Oh my.

2019 he will rip the midfield to shreds. Will play well in patches next season but once he builds the tank, it is going to be ridiculous.

Bit hard to get a good read as thereā€™s not that big a field of 190cm (ish) forwards these days.

Heā€™s taller and heavier than Cramers and Membrey, shorter than Gunston but heavier. They are the main ones I can think of.

And he takes way way less contested marks (0.57 per game for Stringer, 0.89 a game for gunston, 1.02 per game for Cramers, 1.38 a game for Membrey ) and fewer marks in total (3.24 per game to 5.86 for Gunston & 4.18 for Cramers, 5.7 a game for Membrey).

Adelaide Tom Lynch, Dan menzel, the Silvagni kid at Carlton, Jack darling: all waaaay more prolific marks.

His favourite move is the shimmy his defender out of the way and run onto it out the back, Peter Hudson style. Which sides have wised up to. I think if he got a bit better overhead it would actually force defenders to play him a bit differently.

Having a guy like Stringer on your list will certainly pose questions for the coaching team in regards to our gameplan.

The ability to have 6 or 7 guys capable of playing midfield and forward to a high standard is going to create a lot of headaches for the opposition.

Very common path.
Thy get out of the game and make an effort.
A year or two down the track, realise they donā€™t have to try, and start phoning it in.

Only from memory, but I think our work around the ground has been ok (comparatively) and Hepps did most of the work. Where we have been smashed is in the centre square (where Jobe was our most effective clearance player). Stringer could go through that rotation pretty quickly

hope you know i was just trying to condition myself to not getting him. it worked. fully expected not to get him, but im quite happy we do have him.

And for the 17 other teamsā€¦BADNESS!!

Still a chance to go to the cats apparently, according to some of the communication specialists.
Chris Grant still saying heā€™s a strong chance to stay at the kennel

Nah he is sitting out the year and staying in New York. He will go cheaply next year.

Can you imagine if we could get everyone on the list to do that

Cale Hooker gets people to block for him.

Funny thing about stringer is if you watch a couple of his pre draft interviews he calls himself a mid/forward who loves a tackle.

Out of the ex footy players I actually reckon he is one of the best. Not much competition I know but heā€™s better than Bruce, zemplis, darcy and Russell. Huddo is better but donā€™t think he does TV anymore.

Jason Bennett is probably the best at the moment.
